Finalists announced for 2025 Iwi Radio Awards
For immediate release: Friday 10th October 2025

Te Whakaruruhau o Ngā Reo Irirangi Māori Inc. (WHA) is proud to announce the finalists for the 2025 Iwi Radio Awards, which return this year to honour excellence in te reo Māori broadcasting.

Scheduled for Saturday 18 October 2025 at Pettigrew Green Arena in Napier, the Awards bring together more than 500 iwi broadcasters, whānau, and stakeholders from across Aotearoa to celebrate the unique contribution of iwi radio.

“This year’s finalists demonstrate the breadth, depth, and creativity of iwi radio — from rangatahi-driven shows and reo Māori excellence to cutting-edge digital platforms,” says WHA Chair Peter-Lucas Jones.

“Iwi radio remains a force for uplifting te reo Māori, tikanga Māori, and kaupapa Māori across the motu.”

Kawenata - Statement of Intent signed between Trust Tairāwhiti and Ngāti Oneone

Trust Tairāwhiti and Ngāti Oneone have signed a Kawenata – Statement of Intent – committing to a shared programme of outcomes.

Both parties have worked together over the past four months in response to the Oneone ki te Whenua Kaupapa.

“Ngāti Oneone is the mana whenua and ahi kaa of the port area in Tūranganui-a-Kiwa. This whenua holds immense cultural and historical significance for the hapū,” says Trust chair David Battin.

“The Trust acknowledges its responsibility in restoring and sustaining mana whenua relationships.”
Together, the Trust and Ngāti Oneone have drafted a Kawenata that commits to key outcomes, including:

• The transfer of specific titles on Hirini Street, of special significance to Ngāti Oneone.

• An enduring partnership between the Trust and the hapū.

• Funding to support hapū-led initiatives that deliver outcomes under our framework He Rangitapu He Tohu Ora.

“I want to acknowledge and thank Ngāti Oneone for their patience. For the Trust, this is not about settling historical grievances. It is about living our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi through He Rangitapu He Tohu Ora,” Mr Battin says.
