Filipo to Depart Waikato Rugby for Overseas Coaching Opportunity
Waikato Rugby wishes to announce the impending departure of NPC Head Coach, Ross Filipo, at the end of the 2025 Bunnings National Provincial Championship season, having accepted an exciting new coaching opportunity oversees.
Filipo has been an integral part of Waikato Rugby for over 7 years, bringing passion, leadership, and a deep commitment to the development of rugby and players in the region. Since taking on the role of Head Coach in 2021, he has played a pivotal role in shaping the team’s culture and performance, and his influence will no doubt be felt for years to come.
In a statement, Filipo said:
“It's been a huge privilege to lead this team over the last five seasons. There has been many layers of success achieved during this time and a lot of that can be attributed to the collective buy-in and hard work of my coaches, staff and players, support from our senior management and board, stakeholders and the wider rugby community. It was a very tough decision to leave as I have a very strong bond with all of the people in our environment. I am extremely grateful for my time here and incredibly proud of what we have created, but now is a good time for someone else to pick up the reins and take the team forward. I look forward to what’s ahead, but not before what needs to be done right now.”
Of course, Filipo remains fervently committed to Waikato Rugby, the players and the NPC competition in 2025. His departure, however, will certainly be felt by the organisation.
Dr. Amy Marfell, Waikato Rugby’s Chief Executive shared,
"We have been incredibly lucky to have had Ross’ expertise in our system for as long as we have – he has an unwavering commitment to excellence, athlete and values-centred ways of working and his leadership and influence have been felt by both players and staff at Waikato Rugby. We have certainly benefitted greatly from his involvement and commitment. While Ross will absolutely be missed, we are excited for him to take on this new and much deserved opportunity overseas and he will depart us at the end of the season with our full support, gratitude and admiration. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank him for choosing us, for giving of his time and expertise and for being a special part of the legacy of Waikato Rugby.”
While all attention is on the looming 2025 NPC season, which kicks off with Waikato’s first match against Auckland, in Auckland on the 31st July, Waikato Rugby will be sure to recognise the contributions of Filipo prior to his departure at the culmination of the season.
Further announcements regarding the coaching role will be made in due course.
