​So... what was BLERTA?

​Bruno Lawrence’s Electric Revelation and Traveling Apparition.

​All my life I’ve been quietly obsessed with this radical, anti-establishment circus of weirdos and visionary rebels—a chaotic collective fueled by Bruno Lawrence, Geoff Murphy, Corben Simpson, Fane Flaws, Ian Watkin, and Tony Littlejohn.

​From vague memories of watching re-runs of their TV show and feature film as a kid, while my father muttered under his breath about "those bloody hippy dope smokers" and my mum got super starry-eyed reminiscing about seeing them live at Nambassa.

​Through to Geoff Murphy's cinematic masterpieces where Bruno completely stole the show.

​This session has been months in the making. I’ve been quietly chipping away behind the scenes—digging through old footage, spinning forgotten tracks, and tracing how the psychedelic, anti-authoritarian tendrils BLERTA ignited back then have infiltrated today’s underground sound system and festival culture.

​This session kickstarts that bright red 1948 Leyland Tiger bus in a full-tilt sonic tribute.

​As that familiar weightlessness takes hold—dreaming ahead to endless, fever-warm summer nights on some obscure eastern beach— issued himself a challenge to produce this episode in 45 minutes with the absolute proviso to mesh our Aotearoa sound with pure, hedonistic Balearic vibes.

​We’re descending right back into the dark side, plunging headfirst into the sonic architecture of the UTM roster and wading deep through the psychedelic doom of gothic legends Disjecta Membra.

We weave a web of deep NZ underground history, darkwave, and industrial heritage, stitching together line-ups and legacy tracks that bridge the past directly into the present.
​Sinking beneath the atmosphere, live 1987 industrial classics from SPK—Oceania and In Flagrante Delicti—intermingle with Graeme Revell and Lisa Gerard’s Listening / Arrival in the Village and DiS’s The Poets Emerge.
It's a deep lineage connection: Revell's SPK legacy resurfaces on the UTM roster as The SPKtR, while DiS core member Justine Ó Gadhra-Sharp bridges the gap as both a UTM artist and longtime Disjecta Membra collaborator.

The Kiri Karu Memorial Rangatahi Scholarship.

Kiri Karu was a valued and loved member of Free FM’s governing board [the Waikato Community Broadcasting Charitable Trust]. Kiri sadly died in March 2026 and we are now honouring her in the form of a memorial scholarship. Recognising Kiri’s commitment to rangatahi development, we have established this scholarship in line with her kaupapa that offers skills-based employment and provides Free FM with rangatahi focused and Te Reo inclusive content for broadcast and podcast delivery.

This scholarship is applied to a paid internship with Free FM, working a total of 60 hours over 12 weeks. We offer flexibility in working hours, and the ideal candidate might balance these hours with whanau commitments, education or other mahi.

The ideal candidate will be aged 16 to 22, and have skills or interest in media in all forms, radio, podcasts, video or social media.

✅ But – it’s important to point out that this is all about building skills in rangatahi, so a basic understanding of radio, podcasts and content creation matched with a desire to learn is what we really want!

Proficiency in Te Reo Māori and an enthusiasm for sharing and encouraging kaupapa Maaori with the rest of our team is a definite advantage for this role.

The expected outcome is that our intern launches their very own 🎙️ Free FM radio show and podcast.

The successful intern will complete the paid work with a proven work history and a new skillset, and increased confidence in communication and self expression.

​The frost hasn’t just settled—it’s frozen solid. The fog has swallowed the streets, and a heavy, suffocating mid-winter dark has completely taken over Aotearoa. There is absolutely no light left at the end of the tunnel, so we are leaning entirely into the bleakness.

​Tonight marks our fourth and final session of the UTM takeover, and we are closing things out at absolute ground zero.

For this final deep dive, I'm kicking it with Michel, the absolute boss and mastermind behind UTM, to unpack the madness.

​Over the past month, this takeover has completely torn the roof off. We’ve descended into the shadows with the raw post-punk chaos of Trauma Party , the unforgiving, noise-drenched weight of Schkeuditzer Kreuz , and the dark underground depth of LUNG
