Hey whanau and friends - I have the great privilege of being part of the crew sailing Te Matau a Maui Voyaging Waka from Napier to Samoa, Fiji and back to Aotearoa.

This epic journey retraces the ancestral pathways of the Takitimu waka, reconnecting descendants across Te Moananui-a-kiwa through traditional celestial navigation, cultural exchange, environmental stewardship, and the revitalisation of Pacific voyaging knowledge. The voyage is called "Te Hokinga Takitimu" and my personal connection to "The Return" is that my maternal grandfather was born in Fiji.

If you are keen to follow along this journey please follow the a Rangi page for daily updates. Due to having limited internet and contact for up to 2 months I have closed my online stores until the end of October 2026. Apologies for any hassles. If you are in Hawke's Bay and need a Fat Spatula fix, you can still purchase my creations at The Department of Curiosities and Fine Things.

I am excited to be supporting this important kaupapa and I am looking forward to fulfilling my childhood dream of becoming a salty sea-dog .... arrrrrhhh me hearties.

"Charles and his emotional support Nautilus"

I do love the nautilus, this is my second painting with a nautilus in it. I feel that Charles William Lambton, son of the 1st Earl of Durham, who was about 11 or 12 years old in this painting probably needed the emotional support of a suitably qualified cephalopod.

Will list this painting on my website tonight.

"Playtime for Cthulhu"

Attracted by the bright flags and tiny moving parts, Cthulhu has a play with the boats in the shallow harbour of Nelson. A welcome distraction from the battle between good and evil.

Playtime for Andy. Great to bust out the ink pens and do a bit of line work. It's been too long.

"I bought this painting for $227 and now it is worth so much more".

Nothing is worth anything without demand. For those with wealth and corporations, art is an investment. So the perception that the artwork will have a higher future appraisal raises the value of the artwork.
