VOICE COACHING WITH KELLY HOCKING

This workshop focuses on using the voice effectively on set, whether directing an actor or getting a colleague’s attention. Kelly Hocking of The Voice Lab NZ combines voice theory and practical techniques to improve vocal communication skills. She covers topics such as maintaining comfortable volume, reducing vocal fatigue, and aligning the voice with intention.

- Fundamental vocal function and how it affects our communication.
- How our “vocal identity” affects our vocal habits.
- Calibrating the voice to match our desired communication style.

ABOUT KELLY
Kelly Hocking is a multidisciplinary performing artist, voice coach, and vocal technician based in Ōtepoti. Through her practice, The Voice Lab nz, she works with performers, speakers, and presenters nationwide to help them strengthen, sustain, and refine their vocal abilities.

Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Kelly has studied vocal pedagogy and voice science in both the United States and New Zealand, developing a comprehensive understanding of the voice across disciplines. Her clients include professional recording artists, actors, community arts organisations, and individuals seeking to explore and enhance their voice work.

Kelly holds a Master of Arts degree from the University of Otago and lectures in voice and movement.

Learning voice science is fun!

Not that long ago, I didn’t have a solid toolbox for my vocal instrument, even as a vocal major and professional singer.
It took for me to have a serious vocal injury to finally seek out the tools that I wished I’d had all along.
The flow-on effects to my health and well-being made me want to share my learnings far and wide.
Developing a unique pedagogy for visual, authentic and heartfelt learning, here at Nook Road Productions our focus is to support you to connect with your tension-free voice so you can have more FUN!
Singing is meant to be joyous! Everything is just a position, and a position can be changed.

Back to the south after a truly spectacular conference in Auckland.
3 days jam-packed full of absolutely brilliant resources and learning for teachers of voice.
At 5pm on Friday I stood, shell-shocked with the wonderment of it all, and not ready for it to be over.
A huge thanks to everyone for all the incredible effort.

Last Friday I attended a wānanga through Three Lakes Cultural Trust on ARI’s (Artist Run Initiatives). It was so incredibly inspiring and a timely reminder that creative projects and collaborations can evolve from the tiniest sparks of an idea, and in the smallest or most unsuspecting spaces.
I feel grateful and inspired 🙏
