FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DEPARTED FROM US
The Church of Thor Odinson of New Asgard looks upon the calamities presently afflicting peoples across Midgard with sorrow. Earth has shaken, mountains have broken, waters have risen, and communities have found themselves confronted by forces against which courage offers no immunity. We think particularly at this time upon the peoples of Nepal and the Himalayan communities confronting such terrible devastation, while remembering also those across other afflicted nations and wherever the forces of nature have recently brought death and destruction. Lives have been taken, homes destroyed, families divided, and ordinary days transformed without warning into days that shall be remembered for generations.
We know not yet the full number of those who have departed from us, and we shall not turn human suffering into arithmetic before every village has been reached and every family has been heard. Behind each number eventually written upon a page will have been a person: somebody's parent, child, companion, neighbour or friend. Their lives were infinitely larger than the manner in which they ended, and their absence will be measured not merely in thousands, hundreds or tens, but in the empty places they leave beside those who loved them.

And so the Church offers its sorrow to the departed, and its fellowship to those who remain. To those searching rubble and riverbanks; to those waiting upon word that has not yet come; to rescuers entering places others must flee; and to communities who shall awaken tomorrow knowing that their world has changed β may strength find thee when thine own strength is exhausted, and may helping hands find thee before despair does.
The thunder reminds us that Midgard was never promised to be gentle. Yet when the earth beneath us proves indifferent to human life, humanity itself need not be. We cannot command the mountain to stand, the glacier to remain, nor the waters to stay within their banks. But we may choose what happens afterward: that the living shall seek the lost, shelter the displaced, comfort the grieving, remember the departed, and carry one another until the storm has passed.
To all those who have departed from us at this time: may thy journey onward be peaceful, and may thy names remain among those who loved thee.
