🚨Southland will remain in a state of local emergency following the severe wind event on Thursday 23 October.

The extension was declared by Southland District Mayor Rob Scott this afternoon following advice from local Emergency Management Southland controllers and officials due to ongoing support requirements.

We’re incredibly proud of how resilient Southland has been, and the support shown to neighbours and the community has been wonderful to see 🙌

💰 It’s a one-off assistance fund – whether it's for covering the cost of essential household items, or costs related to clean-up and recovery. If it can make things a little easier for you, your whānau, or your business, we strongly encourage you to apply.

We’ve been continuing to monitor the weather, and it looks like Southland may experience strong westerlies this afternoon, gusting 90 km/h until evening.

While the wind isn’t predicted to reach warning levels, we urge everyone to take care all the same, given the amount of debris that is still around. Be vigilant around the potential risk of unstable trees or hanging material coming down.

If you’re able to, double check your property is secure and check in on your neighbours. If you have debris or materials that you’re waiting to dispose of, ensure it’s in a sheltered location, or tied down to not cause any further damage.

Keep up to date with MetService New Zealand, who will provide up-to-date weather information as the day goes on.

If you spot any downed trees blocking roads, or trees that look as if they may be a safety risk for people or property, please let Southland - Fire and Emergency know.

We’ll of course provide any updates as & when we get them too.
