⚡🟡Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for Canterbury🟡⚡

📍Where: Areas of Canterbury and possibly also Christchurch City
🕛When: 1:30pm - 9pm Friday 23 January
⁉️What: Downpours, large hail and thunderstorms. Hourly rates of 25-40mm possible, which can cause flash flooding

‼️REMEMBER: We have the ingredients to make severe thunderstorms for a broad area, so for now we'll 🟡WATCH🟡 out if one gets cooking. When and if we spot a severe thunderstorm, we will issue a Severe Thunderstorm 🔺WARNING🔺 to let you know we're cooking! These 🔺WARNINGS🔺 are localized and shorter lived in nature, so even if we do get cooking, it won't be for everyone!

⚡️Canterbury Weather Updates thunderstorm watch (issued yesterday) has now been upgraded to a warning, with possible severe thunderstorms this afternoon.

🔎⚡️Cell development is likely to be more widespread north of around Porters Pass.

ℹ️Ensure you're keeping up to date with out town pages as conditions evolve.

⚡️As is always the case, storms will be localised.

Just when we thought the sun had come out...⛈️ Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Canterbury

MetService has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch from 1:30pm to 9pm today. There is a moderate risk of a few of these thunderstorms becoming SEVERE, producing localised downpours of 25 to 40 mm/h or large hail in excess of 2 cm in diameter.

We’re keeping a close eye on conditions and will share updates here and on our website if anything changes.
