When Lucy Hopkins and Hikalu Clarke look back on the beginning of their story, they laugh at how unlikely it all seemed. They were students then, crossing paths in the Fine Arts department. “Hikalu was a terrible student and I was always in class,” Lucy says, “so we were kind of ships in the night until we just ended up hanging out one time. Sparks flew pretty quick.”

“I was hungover,” Alice laughs, recalling the first time she met the man who would become her husband. She had wandered out of her Stockholm apartment in search of fresh air, and had found herself pushing open the door of a nearby interior design store. Inside was Henrik (it was his store). “I remember thinking he was cute and friendly,” she says. “I don’t think he could say the same about me that day.”

He could, as it turns out. And four years later they were married in a chic ceremony surrounded by their closest friends and family.

“It was a fusion, but not in a forced way,” Allison Boyajian-Hanley says. “Like two separate clans choosing each other. Which, I guess, is exactly what the whole thing was.” Set against the dramatic backdrop of Edinburgh’s Dundas Castle last June, the wedding of Allison to Stefan Hanley was a day that managed (with considerable grace) to be two things at once. Scottish and Armenian. Formal and barefoot. Carefully considered and entirely natural.

The story of Rebe Burgess and Harry Healy began with a gentle nudge from fate, or more precisely, from Harry’s mum, Madeline. While Harry was living in London, Madeline would regularly visit Muse Boutique in Auckland, where Rebe worked (a store owned by Madeline’s older son’s wife). She would drop subtle hints about Harry to Rebe and then vice versa, sparking what became a running joke between colleagues and family alike. “It went on for about two years,” Rebe recalls with a smile. “Eventually, Harry moved back home, and we crossed paths a few times. But it wasn’t until his brother Nick’s wedding that we really connected — on the dance floor, of course.”

In the tradition of many modern love stories, Freddie Leckie and Lawrence Pretty met on an app, chatting on and off before finally deciding to meet for a real date… a 6am, mid-week walk on the coastal path from Sydney’s Bronte to Clovelly. “Our first date was at the crack of dawn,” Lawrence remembers with a laugh.

A few years into their relationship, the same coastal track that began their story became the setting for their next chapter. Freddie had been quietly planning a proposal for months, choosing their regular morning walk so it would feel familiar and unassuming, “something simple and real,” he says. As they reached the cliffs overlooking the ocean, the sun broke through the clouds and a pod of dolphins swam past. Shaking and teary, Freddie got down on one knee. “At first I thought he was breaking up with me,” says Lawrence, laughing. “Or dying!” But then came the question, and a very quick yes. “We just stood there hugging and laughing,” Lawrence tells me, “For anyone watching it would have looked like a real train wreck! But for us, it was very special and unforgettable.”

Online now, our monthly moodboard captures the silhouettes, set-ups, fabrics and references that are holding our attention beyond specific collections or trends. It’s an ongoing sartorial study that examines the evolution of modern matrimony, how it resists definition and the variety of ways this can show up visually.

This month (blame Pieter Mulier’s exit from Alaïa which has prompted a joyous dive into the archives, or the recent haute couture collections out of Paris) our inspiration is being derived from looks that balance structure and softness, discipline and desire, elegance and edge, all with a nostalgic nod that reminds us not to take it too seriously.
