🩺 Local Nurses: Are You Seeing This in Horowhenua? 🩺

As a journalist with the Horowhenua Chronicle, I want to hear from local nurses and healthcare workers about what’s really happening on the ground.

The New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) says Te Whatu Ora is refusing to prioritise patient safety, with a new offer that drops earlier commitments to address chronic understaffing. Data from the Care Capacity Demand Management (CCDM) programme shows that nearly half of all wards nationwide were understaffed at least one shift per week between January and October last year.

NZNO members say this ongoing staffing crisis is putting patients at risk and driving staff burnout.

Event Recap: Inflatable Kingdom

On Monday, Shannon hosted Inflatable Kingdom, a pop-up event that transformed the local space into a hub of fun for children and families with bouncy castles, Nerf and basketball shooting ranges, giant games, and a dedicated toddler zone for children under three.

The day began with a sensory-friendly session, offering a quieter environment with dimmed lights and reduced noise, a welcome feature for children with sensory sensitivities.

The event was organised by Horowhenua District Council as part of its school holiday programming, an initiative clearly appreciated by the local community, with many families turning out for the affordable day of entertainment.

He Rāhui He Rāhui

He kura tangihia, he mamae aroha.
He mate, he mate ohorere i waenganui i o tātou, aue te mamae, haere, haere, haere atu rā. Moe oki oki roa.

Muaūpoko have placed a rāhui with the support of the Lake Horowhenua Lake Trust due to the tragic passing and recovery of a tūpāpaku at Hōkio Beach.

The rāhui includes the areas / waterways of:-

▶️ Hōkio Beach (from the duneset on either side of the Hōkio Awa outlet, including the Rakau Hamama Lagoon)
▶️ Hōkio Stream
▶️ Lake Horowhenua

The Rāhui is a restriction on swimming, recreational activities and gathering of kai in these areas.

We are deeply saddened with the events that have taken place, in the interest of everyone's wellbeing, we ask that the rāhui is adhered.

Ka rere ngā aroha mai i te manawa nui o Punahau ki te whānau pani i tēnei wā pouri.

A couple of weeks ago, a news reporter came through to do a story on me.

Last Friday, the article was released in the Horowhenua Chronicle, and yesterday, I got to catch up with the reporter again local journalist to talk more plans and grab some copies of the article.

It’s a blessing to be moving in these spaces and sharing my story on bigger platforms.

I'm so passionate about using my voice and experiences to inspire and create change. Stay tuned, Horowhenua and Manawatū big things are coming!

This weekend, I had the pleasure of heading down to the Horowhenua AP & I Show to cover one of the region's longest-running community events. 📸 It’s always the best opportunity of the year to really take the pulse of rural Horowhenua and connect with the heart of our local community. ❤️
