Grease or oil - Choosing the right lubricant for your application
When applying industrial bearings, few choices are as important as the choice between grease and oil lubrication. Grease and oil share the same fundamental purpose, and each play an essential role in reducing friction, minimising wear and extending bearing life. That said, the conditions in which they operate best are very different.

Put simply, making the wrong bearing lubrication choice can lead to overheating, premature failure or unplanned downtime. In order to avoid these consequences, let’s look at how production managers can choose the best lubricant — and avoid the cost of equipment downtime.

Annual HMS Networks report confirms growing dominance of Industrial Ethernet
Despite the overall slowdown, the study confirms that Industrial Ethernet continues to strengthen its position, while traditional fieldbus technologies are declining at an accelerating pace. During the past two years, shortages in electronic components sustained the demand for serial-based fieldbus solutions as companies turned to any available technology. However, with components now more readily available and economic pressures mounting, the focus has shifted toward more cost-efficient and scalable Ethernet-based communication.

HMS Networks has released its annual analysis of the industrial network market, revealing key trends and developments. After an exceptional surge in 2023, the market experienced a slight slowdown in 2024, with a decrease of approximately 10-11% in newly installed nodes. This dip is primarily attribu...

Metal detection for food safety protection When it comes to HACCP inspection machine choices, the options can seem overwhelming. However, given that metal could be introduced at any phase of production, for example from cutting meat, filleting fish, grinding spices or mixing dry and wet ingredients, a metal detection system is normally the first line of defence.

As the only food metal detector manufacturer currently in New Zealand with a dedicated service and support team, Fortress Technology explores the link between automation and why metal remains the biggest and most likely contaminant risk within food processing and packing plants. When it comes to HAC...

The Canterbury engineering business with trained staff who never want to leave
An unwavering commitment to upskilling its people has helped keep tool maker Sutton Tools (NZ) out in front despite a string of setbacks including an earthquake, a pandemic, and in 2022, a fire that gutted their Kaiapoi factory. Now though, the future looks brighter than ever with a brand-new factory in Rangiora and a forward-focussed masterplan that will drive expansion and power up their knowledge base.

Effective temperature management for AI-enabled data centres
As data centres and AI-driven systems continue to scale in complexity and performance, effective thermal management has become more critical than ever. With rapidly increasing storage densities and computing power, these infrastructures generate substantial volumes of thermal energy during operation. The greater the data throughput, the higher the heat load, posing significant challenges to system stability and efficiency.

Plastics industry rising stars honoured at Plastics NZ Awards
He’s not a doctor, a nurse, or even a police officer but Rajeneel Kumar helps to save lives.

Named 2025 Competenz Plastics Apprentice of the Year at the annual Plastics NZ Awards on Thursday night, the Manurewa local produces critical components for lifesaving technologies - from ventilators for premature babies to sleep apnoea devices and hospital masks.

“It’s pretty cool how the components we make are used to save lives – it makes the job rewarding,” says Rajeneel, who has spent over a decade at Fisher & Paykel Healthcare and last year completed his New Zealand Certificate in Plastics Processing (Level 4) with strands Injection Moulding through work based training organisation, Competenz.

Wyma mud towers and Bonfiglioli save water in food processing
Sustainability is a significant priority for the agriculture sector, with organisations seeking out solutions that enable a reduction in water usage and waste disposal.

New Zealand-based manufacturer of post-harvest vegetable and fruit handling equipment, Wyma Solutions has saved some of its customers over 1 million litres of fresh water per day with its water recycling solutions. These have significantly reduced waste disposal costs and have allowed larger washlines to be implemented in regions bound by maximum water use consents.

Meridian’s underwater employee receives rave reviews
One of the newest members of Meridian’s Generation team has been warmly welcomed onto site before being unceremoniously sent into the chilly depths of Lake Benmore.

Don’t worry – no employees were harmed. Meridian has instead enlisted the services of a Kiwi-built underwater robot to perform inspections of the company’s hydro stations, and minimise the amount of downtime.

“Until now we’ve used divers to manually inspect underwater assets like canals, dams and spillways,” says Meridian GM Generation Tania Palmer. “That requires heaps of safety precautions and is reliant on good diving conditions to do the job well.

Bioenergy is essential for keeping the lights on
Ensuring a reliable and steady electricity supply across New Zealand - powered by renewable energy - requires a coordinated and collective effort. By nature, renewable resources such as solar and wind are variable in their availability. Generating electricity from these sources involves multiple stakeholders, each with their own investment goals and expectations of return.

To manage variability in electricity supply, particularly from wind and solar, we need mechanisms to smooth out fluctuations in both quantity and quality. This is where bioenergy - through gaseous, liquid, and solid biofuels - plays a critical role. Controllable, on-demand electricity generation is increasingly valuable and bioenergy is ideally suited to meet this need.
