HEADS UP WHĀNAU - RAIN & WIND INCOMING
WARNINGS & WATCHES are in effect across our district not as bad as last week (phew) whānau, but here’s what you need to know to stay in the loop:
HEAVY RAIN WARNING (ORANGE)
When? 1700 hours (5pm) Mon, 27 Oct - 0500 hours (5am) Tue, 28 Oct, 2025
Where? Central North Island hill country, from southern Waikato to Tongariro National Park.
What’s happening - 60 to 90 mm of rain is heading your way, especially in the ranges. Thunderstorms might join the party. Expect 15-25 mm of rain per hour on Monday evening and overnight.
Don’t stress red warning levels are unlikely, but still.
Impact: River’s rise, flooding may appear, and roads could get slippery. So maybe skip the moonlit drive through the hills for now.
Action: Clear your gutters, avoid low-lying areas, and drive like you're in a fast & furious rainstorm.
STRONG WIND WATCH
When? 1500 Hours (3pm) - 2200 Hours (10pm) Mon, 27 Oct
Where? South Taranaki to Taihape (including inland Whanganui).
What’s happening - North to northwest winds could hit gale-force in exposed spots. There’s a moderate chance this could escalate to a Warning, so if you’re planning to fly a kite, maybe... don’t.
Impact: Things might get breezy, so hold onto your hats and your sense of humour.
Take action: Stay updated, stay safe, and don’t forget your Swannie...Redband's and possibly a Fluffy and Eclair to Go!
