We have a fire outside alot. The clear nights recently have been amazing for star gazing. There is a traditional method of treating bamboo using flame. You burn the bamboo lightly without letting it catch fire, the sugar and starch rises to the surface, you wipe it off and repeat. In this case I've got a fire going burning small off cuts and enjoying the loud bangs they produce. When green bamboo burns, the air trapped in its hollow sections expands and bursts with loud pops and bangs. In Chinese, firecrackers are called "bàozhú," which literally means "exploding bamboo," because that's how they started.

Built this railing out of two different bamboos. The posts are Moso, Phyllostachys edulis, native to China and Taiwan. The rails and uprights are Phyllostachys bambusoides, a premium building bamboo with thick walls and straight poles. Kept it all green and untreated, so it'll be interesting to see how long it lasts in the full elements. Even still, once it's served its purpose, it'll make amazing kindling. The whole project cost about eight dollars for the bugle screws to fix the posts onto the existing deck. We're currently in the process of setting up a treatment facility to make treated poles. We'll keep you updated with the progress.

Today I spent some time on the bamboo playhouse project. Building with this stuff is extremely fun. It flows and it's achievable without using a tape measure or plan. Perfect for getting your brain going creativly. This is a very basic idea, but the sky is the limit.
