AI is playing a surprising role in protecting one of New Zealand's rarest lizards - the Whitaker's Skink.

With a few dozen living at Wellington Zoo, they hold a significant proportion of the known population.

Because these skinks are nocturnal, it's hard for keepers to know what they're doing at night. So they're using AI cameras to detect movement and build a clearer picture of their behaviour.

The AI is still in development, but it’s being built to determine emergence time (when the skinks come out into the open), which will help the team understand what they are doing - and adapt their management approaches to better look after them.

Trapping introduced predators is a really important part of protecting wildlife in Aotearoa NZ. These traps use a lure to attract their target species.

Lures can come in a range of different types - such as smell-based lures (like this dried rabbit), visual lures (like eggs), and more.

Happy 100th birthday to the one and only Sir David Attenborough 🎂

Your passion, storytelling, and innate curiosity have inspired multiple generations of people to learn and act for our planet.

You've led by example for many decades - from the early and intrepid Zoo Quest adventures, to the immersive modern documentaries that we all know and love.

Personally, we have been motivated to work harder in our conservation fieldwork and advocacy following your example.

It must have been difficult to see the declines in biodiversity over your lifetime. You've consistently sent a message of hope and urgency - that even when the state of our ecosystems are grim, we can turn this situation around.

We are forever grateful for your lifelong efforts - keep on inspiring us 💚
