Around this time of year in the warm island waters, the ocean welcomes new life—gentle whale calves, playful orca pups, gliding stingray babies, and tiny turtles making their first journey beneath the waves. These precious new arrivals are cradled by the tides and watched over by their pod or whānau, a beautiful reminder that the moana is always renewing, always nurturing.

I wanted to visit with one of the sweetest waiāta, from my childhood. Being Ngāti Kahungunu, whenever I hear this waiāta it stirs my heart, my core......

Sir Āpirana Ngata played a significant role in bringing the waiata "Tūtira mai ngā iwi" to the forefront. He actively promoted and collected Māori songs, including "Tūtira mai ngā iwi," as part of his broader efforts to revitalize Māori culture and language. His work with the waiata was closely tied to his efforts in collecting and publishing Māori songs, particularly through the publication "Nga Moteatea".

The Māori song "Tūtira Mai Ngā Iwi" was written by Reverend Canon Wiremu "Wī" Te Tau Huata. He composed it in the 1950s, specifically around Lake Tūtira in Hawke's Bay. Huata, an Anglican minister and chaplain to the Māori Queen, wrote the song with the intention of uniting people from all backgrounds.

Here's a bit more detail:
Composer: Wiremu Te Tau Huata
Time Period: 1950s
Location: Lake Tūtira, Hawke's Bay
Purpose: To promote unity and togetherness among all people, regardless of their background.
Inspiration: Huata was inspired by the area's historical significance as a place of unity for iwi (tribes).
