“The competition is a simple way to add some colour and fun to Bridge Street during construction, and to help families feel connected to the project.”

A competition is currently running for children to create a new design that will adorn one of the diggers involved in the expansive Bridge to Better project.

More people are turning to local food banks as the cost-of-living crisis deepens, but donations are dropping as households struggle to make ends meet. Nelson Community Foodbank is calling on the community to ensure no one goes hungry this Christmas, with shelves looking increasingly empty.

“We will consider a range of different options, including the number and type of homes that could potentially be built on the site and the number of bedrooms per home. We’re still in the very early stages of this process and will keep the community informed as we make progress.”

Kāinga Ora has reversed its decision to shelve its housing development at 4 Examiner St and 57 Wellington St.

Last month, Kāinga Ora confirmed that the project was on hold in the long term. However, the agency is now actively going back to the drawing board.

In just a few months, three new battery bins have diverted 1500kg of batteries from Nelson’s landfill. The bins were installed outside the Nelson Environment Centre, by the hazardous disposal area, and will also soon be found at Civic House.

The bins were designed in Nelson after no equivalent product could be found domestically or overseas. Photo: Nelson City Council.

Nelson’s roads are some of the best in the country, its residents say. Overall satisfaction with the council also remained steady – 59 per cent this year, compared to 60 last year – the Nelson City Council’s 2024/25 residents’ survey found.

Local AA branch chair Kyle Lightfoot said that while Nelson's roads were good, congestion was another story. Photo: Max Frethey.

“I’m just your local Joe Bloggs and I nearly died – but I’ve defied the odds.”

When Fiona Pitcaithly arrived at this year’s Purple Poppy Day service in Nelson on 23 February, she never imagined it would be the start of a journey that would change her life forever.

Eight years ago, Karen Barks and Max Riley were maths teachers living in Washington Valley where they transformed their suburban garden into a “food forest”. When the opportunity arose to buy a fertile block of land at Appleby, they changed their lifestyle and became organic vegetable growers.
