NEXT MEETING THIS TUESDAY 23 SEPTEMBER 2025 9.30AM START AT NELSON GOLF CLUB CAFE.
Workshop 23 September – Ruth and Beverly were going to take a session on applique but instead there will be a class in
candlewicking.
Sue Bowskill is a hugely talented needlewoman and quilter who has
agreed to come along this day to demonstrate and teach us the particular stitches needed for candlewicking. Anyone who went to the Quilts in the Garden exhibition in Hope last March will have seen Sue’s superb quilt on display.
Candlewicking is a form of whitework embroidery that gets its name from the soft spun cotton that was once used for the making of candle wicks. Motifs are sewn using traditional embroidery stitches together with a particular tufted stitch that gives
candlewicking its unique character.
All that is required is 12.5 inch square of calico, an embroidery hoop and thread around DMC5. There will be some calico, thread and hoops available for use, but if you are able to bring your own please do so. You will need to bring a needle with an
eye large enough to take, at a minimum, No 5 DMC thread, a pencil to transfer a stencil on to the calico and some scissors.
