Had a chance being featured on Fresh FM’s “Meet the Programme Makers” before leaving Nelson.

But here is the truth:
Nothing about this was planned.
It was just trying something new… and not quitting too early.
💡 If there is one thing I have learned:

Everyone has something unique.
Most people just don’t explore it long enough.
Life is not a straight path.
It is an adventure.
It was a farewell… and one last conversation I did not expect to feel this much. Before leaving Nelson, I sat down at Fresh FM Te Tau Ihu with Delena Britnell, General Manager of Fresh FM, for a final chat in the studio.

What started as a simple conversation turned into something deeper.
A moment to reflect on the journey, the risks taken, and the things we almost never start.
Here is a small teaser of how it all began.
💬 What is something you have always wanted to try, but never started?

Migrants Experience In New Zealand

"What is one piece of advice you wish an established professional had told you at 18?" Well, guess what? None of the professionals has an answer for Gen Z, and the world we built is falling apart.

But he’s not letting that stop him. He is actively building his safety net by embedding himself in community services like the Red Cross, getting ahead of the curve with AI, and, most importantly, finding his voice. He realises that public speaking and strong communication aren't just "soft skills"; they are essential survival tools when the traditional pathways are closed off.

It’s a massive reminder of the power of stepping out and building your own network. What’s the best piece of career advice you'd give to a young, driven student like Thisath right now?

🚨 FROM SRI LANKA TO NEW ZEALAND: SHATTERING THE "LAZY GEN Z" MYTH 🚨

At 18, you think you know it all. Then reality hits,
especially when you move across the world.

🌏Meet Thisath Nethmira. Two years ago, he left Sri Lanka to navigate a completely new life in New Zealand. Transitioning to the New Zealand education system and job market is challenging enough, but doing so as a young migrant requires considerable determination.

While older generations are quick to label Gen Z as "lazy", "non-compliant", or "unemployable", Thisath is rewriting the rules right here in Nelson-Tasman. He isn't just surviving; he is going on the offensive:

✅ Unlocking mysteries of physics.
✅ Smashing it on the badminton court.
✅ Taking on AI challenges like the Vibe coding competitions
✅ Mastering the stage with Toastmasters.

In Episode 17 of New Zealand Student Life , host Buddhika Neranja Daluwattea dives into the reality of being a Sri Lankan student in New Zealand. We talk about the massive gap between textbook theory and real-world expectations, and why listening and discipline are your ultimate superpowers.

If you are part of the Sri Lankan community in New Zealand, an international student, or simply navigating the transition into the real world, you won't want to miss this.
