Over the years, Taranaki Tū Mai has grown into a vibrant festival of sports, kapa haka, kai, and activities that showcase the strength and beauty of our people. This past weekend in Ōpunakē was no exception, with incredible highlights that will be remembered for years to come.

Today we’re joined by an incredible athlete whose journey spans from the rugby fields of New Zealand to the bodybuilding stage.

She grew up playing rugby from primary school through her late 20s, representing the Manawatu Cyclones at provincial level.

After injuries cut her rugby career short, Shanna pivoted to bodybuilding, where she’s achieved phenomenal success—eight gold medals, a tiara, and a silver this year alone! She’s also a qualified personal trainer, balancing her passion for fitness with a full-time job.

Two proud sons of Waitara who have carried their passion for rugby league across oceans. one, a well-known player for the Waitara Bears, the other spending years playing professionally in France before settling in Perth.

Both have become key figures in the Harmony Nines Taranaki Perth kaupapa. Their commitment to fostering whanaungatanga and promoting Māori rugby league values in Australia has made this event a cornerstone for our Taranaki whānau living abroad.

On the show this week we’re joined by Angie Walters, the Host Iwi Coordinator for this year’s Taranaki Tū Mai in Ōpunakē.

This biennial festival is a celebration of whakapapa, culture, and kotahitanga, bringing together the eight iwi of Taranaki for three days of connection, learning, and fun.

While hākinakina (sports) is a big part of the kaupapa, Taranaki Tū Mai is so much more—it’s about wānanga, kapa haka, hikoi, and strengthening the health and wellbeing of our people. Nau mai haere mai Angie.
