No doubt you’ve heard how this week the president of the USA responded to a legitimate question from a journalist by pointing a finger in her face and saying “Quiet! This week the world moved one step closer to the release of the Epstein files. While we probably shouldn’t hold our breath, we may as well enjoy the thrill of anticipation. So here’s a playlist of songs about release, revelations, naming names, secrets and lies, the truth coming out, and dirty old men. Featuring tracks from Anika Moa, Dave Edmunds, Leonard Cohen, Lulu, Cornerstone Roots, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Wendy Matthews, The Band, David Bowie, Kora and Plain Jane Glory.

The list of departed musicians keeps on growing, and this week the world lost former Squeeze drummer Gilson Lavis, and former Grateful Dead singer Donna Jean Godchaux. In their honour, this Sunday’s show highlights their musical contributions both inside and outside of those bands, some of which may surprise you. In addition to the Grateful Dead and Squeeze, we’ll have Jools Holland & His Rhythm & Blue Orchestra backing three great singers – Terri Walker, Eliza Carthy and Kirsty MacColl (separately, of course), plus Keith & Donna, Mica Paris, Elvis Presley, Percy Sledge, and a real curio – a song paying tribute (as far as I can tell) to Keith & Donna Godchaux, by Futurebirds.

Last Thursday, over 100,000 doctors, nurses, teachers, firefighters and other public sector workers took to the streets to demand better working conditions. Being the biggest thing to happen in Aotearoa this week, it’s inspired a playlist of songs about doctors, nurses, teachers and firefighters (it’s pretty hard to find songs about other public sector workers, plus I only have an hour…).
