EJ Barrett has been officially confirmed to have unseated Bryan Vickery. They were ahead by only 151 votes when preliminary results were announced on Sunday, and have maintained their lead with 206 ahead.

Final results were expected yesterday, but ended up being delayed to this morning due to an overwhelming number of special votes cast, up 46% from the 2022 elections.

Dinnie Moeahu has also retained his seat, confirming that Amanda Clinton-Ghodes will not be returning for another term. He holds a 134 vote advantage.

Update 10:30pm: No results to be provided tonight – the declaration or a further update is expected after 8:30am tomorrow.

Taranaki’s final election results were expected to be declared before 4pm today, however there has been a delay due to the large volume of special votes cast. Across the councils covered by our Electoral Officer, there were a total of 22,000 special votes – a 46% increase on the last local body elections.

There are two NPDC seats which only have a margin of around 150 votes each based on preliminary results – Dinnie Moeahu, slightly ahead of Amanda Clinton-Ghodes in District-Wide, and EJ Barrett, slightly ahead of Bryan Vickery in the Kaitake-Ngāmotu Ward.

Results are now expected later tonight. We’ll keep you posted once they come through.

NZTA advises that roadworkers have done a great job clearing slips and restoring access to state highways across the regional boundary between Taranaki and Waikato following this week’s heavy rainfall.

SH3 Awakino between Mokau and Piopio has re-opened today at 3pm today (Friday 17 October), while SH4 between Eight Mile Junction (the intersection between SH3 and SH4) and Taumarunui and SH43 between Whangamōmona and Taumarunui will also re-open today at around 5pm.

Temporary speed limits will be in place on these highways over the weekend, with multiple sites under stop/go traffic controls Monday to Friday while repairs are completed. Repairs are expected to take 2–3 weeks.

NZTA further advises motorists to plan for additional travel times of approximately 40–60 minutes in this area, so only travel iif it’s absolutely necessary.

More rain is expected across parts of the region in the coming week. Slips and other hazards can occur without warning. Travel carefully and follow all temporary traffic management.

Police are investigating a series of thefts involving manhole covers across New Plymouth, with the majority in the Upper Vogeltown area.

They have issued an appeal to the public for any information relating to the thefts, such as suspicious activity or CCTV footage.

Reports of uncovered holes can be made to New Plymouth District Council. The lids protect critical infrastructure and their removal poses risks and hazards to public safety.

Jim Bolger rose from a rural upbringing in Taranaki and a life in farming, to lead the nation as its 35th Prime Minister from 1990 to 1997, and later serve as our Ambassador to the United States. In his time in office, he steered New Zealand through economic reforms, electoral transformation (introducing MMP), and efforts to redress historic Treaty grievances.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon described Bolger as “a towering figure in New Zealand’s political life — a leader of conviction, a reformer of consequence, and a servant of the people whose legacy has shaped the nation in profound and lasting ways.”

According to a statement from his family, he passed away peacefully, surrounded by his wife Joan, his nine children, and grandchildren. The Bolger family has expressed gratitude to the medical teams and staff at Wellington Regional Hospital and Wellington Free Ambulance for their care during his illness.

A patient transfer ambulance carrying a critically ill newborn became stuck in the Awakino Gorge on Monday night after heavy rain caused multiple slips and flooding. Local police officer Constable Donna Potroz was quick to respond, reaching the scene around 1.40am and finding several vehicles stranded — including the ambulance, which was en route from New Plymouth to Waikato Hospital. With air transport grounded due to poor weather, Constable Potroz stayed alongside the medical team to assist with communication and support as crews worked tirelessly to clear the road.

Roading contractors, Police, and Hato Hone St John staff worked through the night to make the road safe. Once conditions improved, an air ambulance was dispatched to fly the baby to Waikato Hospital. Police say Constable Potroz went “above and beyond,” helping ensure everyone felt safe throughout the ordeal. Inspector Darin Haenga praised the teamwork between emergency services, roading crews, and health staff, saying it was a privilege to see such dedication “all before breakfast.”

🚧 Latest NZTA update: We've closed the following roads in northern Taranaki and southern Waikato due to slips and flooding: SH3 from Mokau to Piopio, SH4 from Te Mapara to Taumarunui, SH30 from Te Kuiti to Benneydale, SH31 from Tihiroa to Kawhia, and SH43 from Taumarunui to Whangamōmona.

Roadworkers are actively clearing slips so we can reopen these routes as soon as it is safe. We've had reports of people entering closure areas. This is dangerous and puts you and roadworkers at risk. Stay away until the roads are open.

Water levels are still rising in parts of the network as water moves through catchments, even though the rain has now stopped. This creates challenging conditions for our workers while they restore access to these parts of the state highway network. A huge thank you goes out to our roadworkers for their work.

📹 Watch: Footage of extensive flooding at Awakino. Severe weather has caused flooding, slips and state highway closures, including Taranaki’s two routes north – state highways 3 and 4. Awakino Gorge will remain closed until the slips can be cleared and the road made safe by contractors who are on scene.

Police are aware of some vehicles that are stranded as a result, and a helicopter is searching for trapped residents.

Thank you to Mokau Butcher for sending the footage in.
