I needed a basic pattern, needle size and yarn type, to make all my knitwear shapes from. A base to start with, to work from. I wanted to stop writing patterns while knitting them, then changing them, no consistency and slow to reproduce, i wanted to focus on colour and texture, I wanted simple techniques I could use to create many items.

The scarf collar is a crucial base pattern. From this a scarf is formed, it’s the neck of your sweater, turn it upside down it’s a hat, close off one end, it’s a bag, the bottom of a pair of shorts, it can be easily modified into cuff, an anklet on a pair if pants. Getting to know the stitch count for a collar is the perfect guide and starting point for to build your own knitwear brand.

I wanted to knit patterns that were quick and fun, versatile and simple enough to build on later. Something I could use to develop my own style and vision. I wanted to start my knitwear brand but wasn’t getting anywhere without a basic cohesive collection to pull from. So I drew the shapes and began writing down the patterns. This way I could focus on colour, shaping and design. This way, I could get ahead. I wouldn’t have to think about the math, coming up with new ideas. I could build from my base.

Sigh, if I could just snap my fingers and skip the calculations, I could dye more yarn, more often, in more fun colours! That’s what I thought at the time. So that’s what I set out to do. My knitwear brand vision was too big for my skillset. I got stuck. I got hauled back into my chair like a child told to sit down and eat his peas. It was disheartening, so I began learning how to learn. I realised that anything could be accomplished through taking small steps and by creating systems.

That’s how the recipes began. I created many yarn dyeing recipes so that I could dye yarn in any colour I needed at any time without much thought or effort. I wouldn’t need to source the wrong yarn in the wrong colours that didn’t quite match my vision. I didn’t need to waste any more money in failed yarn dyeing attempts. I was going to do it all myself.

Now I could create cohesive colour palettes. Colour palettes that could be used for my knitwear brand vision. This was step one.

I was afraid to use the dyes. What if I did it wrong, what if it was messy. How toxic were the dyes? I didn’t want to wear gloves. I didn’t take it seriously at the time. And, I didn’t want to waste money on professional dye powder. I did waste money. It took me a long time to learn how to dye yarn.

I remember the day that I was going to dye yarn. I always start new projects while house sitting. Maybe 🤔 the thought process is, if I don’t succeed at my own house, it’s not my responsibility haha.

II purchased a large cheap pot and a few Wilton Cake Dye primaries. The yarn went in the pot. The food colouring went in the pot. This is where it all began… It was fun and easy. Plus, I could make delicious cakes too.

Wilton’s cake food colouring is a fun way to get started dyeing yarn! I definitely had to try it. I had to test my recipes in the cakes too!

Tired of not having the colours I need, not being able to buy the yarn colour for the yarn type… I decided to dye my own yarn in the colours I’ve always wanted to wear. I got fed up with high prices and with cheap fashion, so I decided I was going to make my own clothing, dye my own fibre and live life on my own terms…in a way that made more sense. This aligned with supporting locally grown wool.
