The gallery is humming with work - it is such a joy to be in this space amongst so much creative endeavour. Do drop in and take pause, look closely, touch some things and wonder - GROUNDED is a celebration of 50 creatives committed to their art practice, searching, repeating, pausing, dreaming, questioning, shouting and swearing - loving it, living it. KYM BURKE

Kim is a multidisciplinary artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau. Her practice engages with questions of materiality, form and impermanence. In recent years, she has been researching and working with cellulose rice paper to create diaphanous sculptural installations that explore temporality and transformation. For Grounded, Kym presents ‘Ever close’ and ‘Enfolding’. These works speak to a sustained creative practice and enquiry into margins of relationality, a thin skin that is at once containing and porous.

Lara Thomas is a multidisciplinary artist working in sculpture, drawing and printmaking. For Grounded she presents her Releaf drawings. Riffing on the tradition of relief sculpture in art, ‘Releaf drawings’ dance between linear and sculptural - a line drawing, yet solid and separate from any ground, free to move and cast its own shadow. Created with a 3D pen and recycled PET filament, these works are an ode to the humble leaf, an enduring symbol of life and growth, and to which we owe so much.

Kara Burrowes is a multidisciplinary artist from Ōtautahi/Christchurch. She is a painter working with multi media including concrete, charred wood, rusted steel, glitter and silk thread. More recently her practice has expanded to include jewellery making. She is fascinated by materials, the discarded, forgotten and strange. Her work often carries a sense of unease or tension, atmospheric and moody.
For the Grounded show she has two embroidery pieces mounted in steel frames, both were made for “Nocturne” a show at Ashburton Art Gallery earlier this year.
Kara is represented by The Central Art Gallery

Zoë Nash is a multidisciplinary artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau whose vibrant practice is built through slow, mindful accumulation.
For Grounded, Zoë presents Twilight Sleep (with silver) I & II, brightly coloured paintings alive with intricate patterns, repeated marks and references to the natural world.
Zoë has long been drawn to the weird and wonderful qualities of nature. Plants and flowers become recurring motifs within her work, translated through layers of colour, detail and repetition. What initially appears playful and exuberant reveals itself gradually, with beauty and unease, innocence and experience, personal and shared histories existing side by side.
The richness of Zoë’s paintings comes partly from the time invested in their making. Repeated marks accumulate into intricate surfaces, encouraging the viewer to slow down and look more closely.
This deliberate process of looking and making captures something central to Grounded: the value of staying with a practice, allowing ideas to grow through repetition, attention and time.

Artist | Deborah Crowe
For Grounded Multi disciplinary artist Deborah Crowe presents two small works part field-photography, part proposition, and part representation of her fears and hopes about potential future
environments. The works emerged from observations – recorded photographically - in Tāmaki
Makaurau Auckland. Both are underpinned by ongoing consideration and visual investigations that seek to explore
and articulate concerns and preoccupations about humans’ treatment of the planet. Wavering, sometimes
dramatically, between a form of eco-anxiety and a blind optimism these works are responses to lack of management of
our climate crisis. They begin with digital collage and incorporate pigment print on fine art paper, paint and print.

Between Certainty and Wonder: Japonica is part of an ongoing series of images and animations titled, Outlook, which
begun in 2016. Not-so-Distant was recently selected and shown as part of the 2026 national New Zealand Painting and
Printmaking Award exhibition.

Julia Christey is a Waikato based artist with an interest in environmental art and contemporary landscape painting.
The “Floodplain” paintings are a painterly exploration of the New Zealand river systems. Notions of material deposits, erosion and human interference over time are reflected in the methodology of painting. A slow process, where many layers are put down and then partially erased, scratched into and wiped off, to reveal a moment in time of a river.
