Hoppertunity Feature: Reel Power — A Line of Her Own

Off the calm waters near Pauanui, where early light glints across the tide, and fishing lines cut clean arcs through the air, Kelly Chambers is quietly making history. With grit, precision, and a 48ft Viking called Ruckus, this record-breaking angler is redefining game fishing on her own terms – one awe-inspiring catch at a time.

The 2023/2024 season was one for the record books. Crowned ‘Angler of the Year’ and winner of the ‘Old Man and the Sea Cup – Most Meritorious’ award at the New Zealand Sportfishing Awards, Kelly’s achievements are technical marvels and sheer endurance feats.

Her most extraordinary catch to date is a 300kg Broadbill swordfish caught on a 24kg line. It smashed the New Zealand record and set a new International Game Fishing Association (IGFA) World Record for a female angler. It was an eight-hour battle of wills through squalls and sunset, requiring absolute focus and the support of her steadfast crew.

“I’ve always believed in pushing boundaries,” Kelly says.

What a turnout for the Mulch Madness Fundraiser yesterday at Hobbs Bay Estate! 🪵

"Mulch Madness Fundraiser UPDATE
Well we couldn’t have had a better morning for our fundraiser! We had a great turnout, I think we had a queue of half a dozen vehicles before 10am! The mulch was very popular with several people returning multiple times for another load.
Huge thank you to the volunteer team of: Terry, Lesley, Derek, Kerryn, Tanya and Pierre who did an outstanding job ensuring everything flowed smoothly and safely.
Thanks also to Ettiene and Hoppers who generously supplied not only the mulch and timber but the digger and driver to load everyone up with.
Lastly thank you to everyone who turned up for a load (or two) of mulch and firewood, we appreciate your support!"

Development Update – May 2025

We’re pleased to share that construction at Hobbs Bay Estate is progressing well across Stages 1 and 2, despite some recent weather challenges. Our team has been working proactively to stay on track and deliver a high-quality development, and we’re excited about the milestones coming up.

Practical completion of site works is to finish within the next month, landscaping is now currently underway, and all further checks are in place to ensure the development is complete with Title later this year.

As we get nearer to the final stages, we’d love to host another Open Day so you can walk the site and get a feel for the lifestyle Hobbs Bay will offer. Keep an eye out for the invitation!
