WE WILL BE AT THE ŌTAKI CHRISTMAS MARKET THIS SUNDAY DECEMBER 10. ŌTAKI YESTERDAY 2023 MAKES A GREAT CHRISTMAS PRESENT.
Come along and get your copy Sunday. We look forward to seeing you.
The fourth issue of the historical magazine Ōtaki Yesterday is available now. This 2023 issue features plenty of the stories about the people and places of old Ōtaki that have shaped what it is today. Who remembers the remarkable gymnastics club that Mari Housiaux created and took to the top of the New Zealand gymnastics scene? Or the outdoorsmen of the Chaney family? Or Peter McBeth, whose butcher family were a big part of Ōtaki life through the middle part of last century? Or the irrepressible Elsie Morgan? Read also about the early life of Colin Bird, who grew up in Ōtaki, married a local, lived in Australia for more than 30 years, and returned to where it all began. Whatever your interest in old Ōtaki, you’ll find something in Ōtaki Yesterday – available for $25 a copy. Contact [email protected] or text 027 285 4720. 2022, 2021 and 2020 editions also still available for $25 each + p&p.

Kia ora koutou, we have the 2022 edition of Ōtaki Yesterday hot off the press.
Ōtaki Yesterday tells the stories of old Ōtaki, with a focus on the town and district’s social history – the people, rather than the “things”.
Our cover story this time around is about the early life of Patricia van der Velden, who came to Ōtaki in the early 1930s after being incarcerated in a Dunedin orphanage. The descriptions of her time in Ōtaki provide wonderful insights into what life was like in those times. She takes us there with her words written for a granddaughter.
We also cover the story of Kaingaraki, the grand old house just south of the Railway shops. It was built in 1881, and we cover some of the early history, but we also relate the stories of the Kimberleys, the last family to inhabit the house.
There are also stories about Rikiville on Mill Road, inhabited by the Rikihana whanau; the family of Ray and Joan Moffatt; the police house in Iti Street; how plumber Tony Beck once went on a diving treasure hunt; the irrepressible Mrs Tse of Dunstan Street; and a wrap-up of the year’s events in Ōtaki.
There’s much to savour in this publication if you love Ōtaki history.
Copies are $25 each, plus $6 for p+p. If you’d like a copy for yourself or as a Christmas gift, you can order directly from me – email [email protected] or text 027 285 4720.
We also have copies of the 2020 and 2021 issues if you missed out then.
I look forward to hearing from you.
