Most public spaces and buildings in Honiara lack adequate toilet facilities. This creates discomfort and inconvenience, especially for visitors and the general public who spend long hours in the city. Establishing clean, accessible public restrooms in key areas such as markets, bus stops, and shopping centers would greatly improve public convenience and hygiene.

The shortage of parks, playgrounds, and open recreational areas is a major concern. While there are some initiatives such as the Childrenโs Park, Unity Square (by SIPA), and the Botanical Garden, these spaces are limited and unevenly distributed. Revitalizing the Mataniko River area with footpaths and recreation zones could greatly enhance the cityโs livability and provide residents with much-needed relaxation spaces.

Littering is one of the most visible problems in Honiara. A combination of better waste management infrastructure, stricter enforcement, and public awareness campaigns is needed to create a cleaner and more welcoming city.

Public buses are the main mode of transport for most residents, yet services are often irregular and poorly managed. There is a pressing need for a regulated, efficient, and affordable public transport system that meets the cityโs growing demands.

Long traffic queues are another major inconvenience. Although ongoing road upgrades may ease the situation in the short term, the increasing number of vehicles and inadequate road maintenance suggest that congestion will remain a persistent issue. Urban planning and better traffic management are critical for long-term improvement.
