Public Interest Law Journal of New Zealand

Public Interest Law Journal of New Zealand The Public Interest Law Journal of New Zealand is an annual, refereed publication showcasing article

The Journal embraces a broad conception of “public interest law” which includes legal issues of importance to vulnerable groups in society as well as the general public. For example, the following topics would be considered to fall within the scope of public interest law: criminal justice; human rights law; environmental law; legal ethics; the Treaty of Waitangi; access to legal services; animal w

elfare law; mental health law; and family law. The Journal’s articles are not purely theoretical, but are guided by a consideration of how the legal issue in question affects real-world problems. The two key aims of the Journal are, first, to provide New Zealand law students with a further opportunity to share their university writing, and secondly, to encourage both students and the wider legal community to engage with public interest law. Moreover, the Journal will provide an interesting insight into the issues that are attracting the attention and concern of those who will become the next generation of lawyers in Aotearoa. The Journal was established in 2013 by Danielle Duffield and Alice Osman, graduates of the University of Otago, who now act as advisors to the Journal. The project was made possible by funding from the New Zealand Law Foundation and the support of the Faculty of Law at the University of Otago.
