Our Kōanga Spring Edition cover features Rangihaute Rangiauria Pitt Island local Morgan Edmonds (Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri), 11, with “the Pitt Plane,” also called “the 206.”
Morgan’s aunt, Raewyn “Tommi” Gregory-Hunt (Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri), says, “It’s used for everything – it flies our mail over, and if we have anything at one of the shops on Chatham we can call or message the pilots and they will pick it up.”
Tommi grew up on Pitt Island, part of the Chatham Islands, enjoying a childhood defined by rugged, open landscapes, self-reliance and the deep connections that come from being part of a community of forty people. Now, the islands’ sole stock agent is following in her father’s footsteps and raising her daughter, Mikayla, the same way that she was – free to roam.
When Tommi’s name first cropped up, it was with both admiration and intrigue of what it would be like to live on an island as isolated as Pitt, and then to be one of the - if not, the - most remote stock agents in Aotearoa - juggling wild weather and broken-down boats just to get stock to market. I knew it was a story we wanted to capture, no matter how long it was going to take to get a photographer across to the island. Tommi’s would have to be the most remote story we’ve told to date, and the journey from commissioning it to seeing it in print has been a really special one.
