SH1 BRYNDERWYN HILLS RESURFACING – PLANNED SUPER WEEKEND CLOSURES.
Final resurfacing works on SH1 over the Brynderwyn Hills are planned for November 2025. These planned 4 day super weekend closures are to complete the resurfacing works needed so the road can reopen at 80km/h with passing lanes in time for summer.
To safely complete this work, State Highway 1 will be CLOSED between Brynderwyn and Waipu (in both directions), subject to weather and other factors, from:
• Thursday 13 November morning(12:01am) to Sunday 16 November midnight (11:59pm)
• Thursday 20 November morning (12:01am) to Sunday 23 November midnight (11:59pm).

During these closure periods three alternative scenic routes are available:
• Light Vehicles via either Mangawhai (using Cove Rd between Kaiwaka & Waipu, no trucks with trailers)
or
via Paparoa and Mangapai (using Paparoa Oakleigh Rd between Brynderwyn & Oakleigh, HPMV's (High Productivity Motor Vehicles) are not permitted on this route).
• The preferred detour for Heavy Vehicles is using SH12 & SH14 via Dargaville (HPMV's must use this route).

A big step forward for freight efficiency in the Wellington region as the NZTA Board approve the Petone to Grenada (P2G) and Cross Valley Link investment case — a long-needed connection that will reduce congestion on SH1 and SH2 and support future growth across Hutt, Porirua and Wellington.

Great news! The NZTA Board has approved the investment case for Petone to Grenada (P2G) and the Cross Valley Link.

The P2G corridor has long been acknowledged as a much-needed strategic link that would provide economic benefits to the Hutt and Wellington region.

Lower Hutt and Porirua are only 10 kilometres apart geographically, but the driving distance is 24 kilometres via SH2, SH1 and the Ngauranga interchange, and almost 50 kilometres via SH58.

State Highway 1 and 2 suffer significant traffic congestion, with both state highways carrying over 70,000 vehicles daily. P2G will deliver significant travel time savings of up to 23 minutes at peak times between Lower Hutt and Porirua, and will remove around 10,000 trips from the SH1, SH2 and SH58 Wellington State Highway network.

The project also supports planned housing growth of more than 30,000 houses in Tawa, Porirua, and Hutt City.

The preferred route provides a more efficient connection with 70 per cent less earth works than previous designs, resulting in lower costs and less impact on communities. I’m pleased a feasible route for Cross Valley Link has also been identified. Next steps for the Petone to Grenada section include route protection, design, and consenting.

Canterbury State Highways update and State of Emergency.

SH7 through the Lewis Pass remains closed while contractors work to protect the carriageway from further river scour and in preparation for road reconstruction – this closure will remain in place for the coming days. The Inland Kaikoura Rd Route 70 is also indicated as closed.
Wind gusts of up to 150kph in the high country and 130kph around Christchurch and on the plains are forecast, with the highest risk period between 10am-4pm Thursday. The heaviest rainfall is forecast between 2am – 3pm Thursday.

The SH73 alpine passes, SH1 corridor, SH8 and 80 through the Mackenzie District, and SH75 Christchurch – Akaroa Rd are key state highways at risk of wind impacts and potentially requiring closures. They are also anticipating further flooding-related road closures where river levels rise close to road level, so perhaps another reason to avoid or reschedule travel tomorrow wherever practicable.

Find regional traffic information to help you plan your journey. See current travel times, traffic updates, information on incidents and roadworks, and traffic cameras in your region.

SH1 is currently closed between Kaikoura and Blenheim upon Police request due to multiple emergency responses along this section. These include vehicle crashes, fires, fallen trees, powerlines down and continuing strong winds.

SH7 was closed earlier today due to the Boyle River scouring away half the highway just north of Engineers Camp and flooding (photos below).

Several highways are also closed on the West Coast due to flooding.

This means that at present there is no HPMV access through the upper south island State Highway network.

General access trucks can use SH73 and an (unsealed) detour route around the SH6/65 Inangahua closure to connect between Canterbury – West Coast – Tasman districts however these are substantial additional travel distances.

There is currently Journey Planner is currently not updating to see the latest go to the NZTA social media pages.

Caution urged on Waikato roads, rain set to get heavier today.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is urging people to drive with care and caution if travelling on Waikato roads today due to heavy rain.
We have already seen multiple flooding sites and slips close State Highway 31 (SH31) between Ngutuni Road and Okupata Road. A detour is in place but will not be suitable for heavy vehicles.
Please follow the detour and allow extra travel time for your journey.

There are also multiple flooding sites on SH30 between Te Kuiti to Benneydale with a closure currently in place between Kopaki Road and Benneydale village.

A detour is available via Mangaokewa Road. This is a narrow and windy road, which is not suitable for heavy vehicles.

The current system’s inability to protect Johnathon is, in itself, proof that it is failing.

At some point, recidivist offenders must face meaningful consequences – including vehicle impoundment – to safeguard both the industry and the public.

We need a sliding scale of penalties, with every lever available to authorities on the table: fines, impounding, and legal action. Anything less leaves lives at risk.
