Have you ever seen whale baleen this close before?

We found several pieces washed up on the beach beside the whale, and getting a proper look at them was fascinating.

Baleen is what some whales use instead of teeth. These flexible plates act like a giant filter, letting water escape while trapping krill and other small food inside.

Up close, you can really see how fibrous and flexible it is. None of us had ever seen anything like it in person before.

This was just one of the things we found during our Hinewai Reserve adventure.

𝗜 𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗪𝗘 𝗪𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗛𝗔𝗟𝗙𝗪𝗔𝗬… 𝗦𝗛𝗘 𝗞𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗕𝗘𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥 😂

We’d just made it to the waterfall and I was feeling pretty confident we had to be about halfway through the hike.

Kristine’s face said otherwise 😂

Turns out the steepest and hardest part of Mt Ni**od was still waiting for us.

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐇𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐭 𝐒𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐲 𝐅𝐀𝐒𝐓 😅

We thought Mt Ni**od was going to be a tough but manageable hike… we were wrong. 😅

Steep drops, rock scrambling, wallabies, a hidden waterfall and a climb we definitely weren’t expecting.

We seriously underestimated this hike 😅

Mount Ni**od looked like it was going to be a tough but manageable walk.

Then the track got steeper.
Then sketchier.
Then we found the waterfall and realised… we were maybe halfway 😂

Throw in wallabies, rock scrambling, some ridiculous views and a few moments where Kristine clearly knew more than we did, and this turned into one of those adventures that just kept getting better.

What Happened to This Forgotten New Zealand Railway?

This forgotten New Zealand railway once carried passengers, workers, schoolchildren and even royalty.

We found these incredible old photographs at Kawatiri while following what remains of the Nelson railway, a line that was once supposed to connect Nelson much farther south but never became the railway they originally planned.

Today the trains are gone, but pieces of the old route, tunnels, bridges and railway history are still sitting there to explore.

This was one of our favourite little discoveries from the full adventure.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐚 𝟏.𝟒 𝐊𝐌 𝐓𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐥 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟏𝟖𝟗𝟎𝐬?!

Kristine asked the question we were all thinking… how did they build a 1.4 km railway tunnel through a mountain in the 1890s? 😮

Crews worked their way in from opposite sides of the mountain until they finally met underground. Standing inside Spooners Tunnel today makes it pretty hard to imagine doing this with the equipment they had back then.

This tunnel was only one piece of a much bigger railway story.

The Ship Behind New Zealand’s First WWII Shots

On 3 September 1939, the cargo ship City of Delhi entered Wellington Harbour and failed to stop when the Janie Seddon challenged it.

What happened next became the story behind New Zealand’s first shots of WWII.

The shots weren’t fired from Janie Seddon. Warning rounds were fired from the shore battery at Fort Dorset after the ship failed to respond.

More than 80 years later, what’s left of Janie Seddon is still sitting on the Motueka foreshore.

Would you walk 1.4 km through an abandoned railway tunnel with no lights? 😆🔦

Spooners Tunnel just keeps going and going, and once the entrance behind us started disappearing into the darkness, it definitely felt a little different.

This is the longest decommissioned railway tunnel in the Southern Hemisphere.

We didn’t realize how long 1.4 km underground was going to feel until the entrance behind us started disappearing into the darkness. 😆🔦

This one turned into a really cool day.

We walked through Spooners Tunnel, the longest decommissioned railway tunnel in the Southern Hemisphere, got a little taste of just how much soot years of steam trains can leave behind 😂 and then followed more of the old railway south to Kawatiri, where another tunnel and bridge are still sitting there today.

There’s something pretty wild about walking through places like this and trying to imagine what it would have been like when trains were actually coming through.

𝗪𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝟭.𝟰 𝗞𝗠 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗻𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀? 😳
From the outside, it really doesn’t look that bad.

Then you get deep enough inside that the entrance disappears behind you… and 1.4 km suddenly feels a whole lot longer. 😂

We found some pretty cool history in there too, including more than 100 years of soot still covering the walls.
