Decided to organise a afternoon ladies shoot here on the farm 🎯

Morning, rode my horse to work, docked some lambs.

Afternoon, smashed a few clays.

Ideal day.

The best part of my job is getting out and about on-farm, even if it is blowing its guts out 🌬

On farm at Arklow in a fairly typical Pongaroa spring breeze today 🀣.

Being a freelancer means I do all sorts of jobs, one of my favourite is in my comms role for our local Puketoi to the Pacific Catchment Collective. Today's event was around opportunities for wetland and riparian planting 🌳

Last night I did something completely outside my comfort zone - I presented on clever apps for farmers at a Beef + Lamb New Zealand Farming for Profit event at the Tui Brewery.

I spoke about:
* DAGI (Drench and Grazing Integration) app
* Aimer Farming app for pasture measurement - turn your phone into a platemeter
* Levno monitoring for fuel, water, milk and feed
* Life360 as a health and safety tool
* How I use OtterAI as a personal secretary

It was a real honour to present at the same event as the visionary Sir Ian Taylor, who was, quite frankly, inspirational.

My key takeaways from Sir Ian:
* Technology and innovation are the things that will take us forward
* We walk backwards into the future
* The future is sustainability and climate change
* Look at AI as a child, it has to be taught. Also be very cautious about what information you give it - everything that you put online is read.
* Go to work to be curious
* The world isn't changing - it has.

A big thanks to Simon and the team from the Beef + Lamb New Zealand Eastern North Island for inviting me along.

Bit late posting this one, but seeing as people seem to enjoy the farming content (perhaps more than the stories?!), here it is...

A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of hosting a great bunch of young people here.

Erosion is one of the biggest challenges we face on our farm.

In conjunction with Horizons Regional Council we undertook a significant pole (poplar and willow) planting programme, which is ongoing.

It was great to host a group of Growing Future Farmers students to show them some of the work we are doing to mitigate the risk and combat extreme weather events. They also had a good look at our soils.

Bonus, Richard has 12 less poles to plant this year - only 338 to go πŸ’ͺ

Thanks to Tammy from Horizons and Amy and Molly from Ballance for sharing their expertise.

Planting native trees 🌳 on the farm today - about 300. Such a feeling of satisfaction.

My husband's mum grew almost all of these from seedlings 🌱 collected from her garden and their farm!

We sprayed before we planted and these areas are below our woolshed, cattle yards and covered sheep yards, so are critical source areas when it comes to run-off.

In this video you see me, hopefully, giving this plant the best chance of establishment by putting in the wire hoops, which are recycled ♻️ and made from old fencing gear. It then gets a combiguard sleeve, which is pinned into the ground (again using recycled wire).

Grow little plants, grow!
