Kia ora Porirua,

Takapūwāhia is the latest village receiving a Chorus cabinet makeover. The cabinet in front of Takapūwāhia Marae on Ngatitoa St is being adorned in a piece called ‘Ngā kōwhaiwhai ō Ngāti Toa Rangatira’.

This impressive piece of work is being painted by local artists Keanyn Arthur, Moana Solomon and Kauia Moriarty.

This mural was chosen by the Takapūwāhia community. We can’t wait to see the finished result!

Uncle Peter Boy ✨ it’s hard not to get teary eyed when you see the utter love and devotion our kaumatua have for these very special places and spaces. Kōrero comes flooding in about memories growing up. The connection between people and their whenua is always talked about and what astounds me is the connection to Te Ara o Raukawa Moana is just as special and important. I wouldn’t know it but shortly after capturing this pic of uncle we had a special moment coming into Te Tauihu. Eyes and heart beaming with aroha and whakatau he turns to me and whispers one word… “Home” we smile and share the moment and he says “We’re home”

Te Mana o Kupe ki Aotearoa 🐚 some know it as Mana Island but it’s ingoa tūturu is Te Mana o Kupe ki Aotearoa. Situated in Porirua Kupe’s anchor stone Moungaroa was left in Ngāti Toa Domain before finally resting in Te Papa 🌀.When Kupe the great Navigator chased Muturangi te Wheke 🐙 from Hawaiki, remnants of this remained scattered as sacred sites to Ngāti Toa Rangatira and for Māori ma across both motu (North and top of the South) to commemorate this feat. Kupe came through Te Ara o Raukawa Moana (Cook Strait) in which he rips Muturangi’s eyeballs 👀 which become known as Ngāwhatu-kai-ponu (Brother’s islands) in Raukawa Moana. This made the Brother’s very tapu. Because of this seafarers of the time could not cast their gaze upon the islands during their first crossing for fear of calamity on the seas. They would adorn their heads with Kawakawa leaves 🍃 which covered their eyes. This then is how Te Ara o Raukawa Moana gets its name from Te Ara meaning path and Rau meaning leaves and kawakawa the type leaves used. .
