🎃 Trick or Treat – Let’s Keep It Sweet & Safe! 👻
The spookiest night of the year doesn’t have to be scary for our little trick-or-treaters or their neighbours!
Here are some simple ways to make Halloween safe and fun for everyone:
🧙‍♀️ Go with a grown-up – Always trick-or-treat with a trusted adult.
🕯️ Stick to well-lit areas – Stay where it’s bright and safe.
🏡 Visit familiar homes – Only knock on doors of people you know, and be mindful not to frighten elderly neighbours.
📬 Use a sign – Pop a note on your letterbox, window, or door that says either:
Trick-or-Treaters Welcome🎃
No Trick-or-Treaters Please🚫
🚪No pressure to answer the door – If you’d prefer not to participate, that’s totally okay.
📞 Need help? – If anything feels off or concerning, don’t hesitate to contact the police for advice or assistance.

Let’s make Halloween a treat for everyone—safe, respectful, and full of fun!

FINAL COMMUNITY UPDATE - OCTOBER WEATHER EVENTS Tuesday 28th October 5:05 pm

This will be our final community update around the October weather events unless anything radically changes.

The State of Emergency for the District will expire on Wednesday 29th of October.

Ongoing welfare support and recovery activities will continue within our community. For any welfare needs, please contact Jo York on 0220 614 558.

A Mayoral Relief Fund has been set up to collect any donations to assist those directly affected by the recent October fire and wind events.

These funds will be administered by the Mayor and held in a separate Council bank account. Please send all donations to 02-0856-0011698-008, Kaikōura District Council.

One hundred percent of these funds will be used for people financially impacted by the events. Any support is greatly appreciated. We are also incredibly grateful for recent support announced from the Honourable Mark Mitchell Minister for Emergency Management and Recovery to help towards those impacted.

We wish to acknowledge and thank everyone who has helped support our community during this difficult and challenging time.

Our sincerest condolences go out to all who have been negatively impacted.

GREAT NEWS

Minister for Emergency Management and Recovery, Mark Mitchell MP has announced, that the Government will be adding $100,000 to Mayoral Relief Funds to help Hurunui and Kaikōura communities impacted by severe weather.

We are exceptionally grateful for this support, which means an additional $50,000 for Hurunui, to help make a real difference in our shared recovery.

Minister Mitchell says, “I’ve spent time this week with affected communities and have been deeply impressed by the resilience, pragmatism, and grit shown by first responders, iwi and community leaders on the ground.

“Today’s contribution to Kaikōura and Hurunui's Mayoral Relief Funds will provide support for the communities’ immediate and pressing needs and will help them as they begin to recover from these events.”

10:20AM

We’re looking to wrap up our Emergency Operations Centre today with a continued focus on gathering data to support recovery efforts. Details for providing this data via a Rapid Rural Assessment are below.

Weather conditions have largely improved, with wind and rain having passed through overnight. Snow is still expected to continue falling until this evening at relatively low levels, but not anticipated to affect townships.

MainPower has restored electricity to most areas, with work continuing on isolated outages at an individual property level.

Water supplies have been largely restored, however high turbidity in rivers is affecting capacity of treatment plants.

Boil water notices are currently in place for Kaiwara, Cheviot and Balmoral, with potential for additional notices depending on treatment plant performance as noted above.

--

We’d appreciate ( even if everything is okay in your patch ) using the Rapid Rural Assessment tool to understand the impact and extent of the damage in your community. This information is then used to determine priority activities for recovery.
