88cm (27lb): Smoky Shad
86cm: Atomic Sunrise

"I can't remember a lot of things. But I can always remember the colour of the big fish."

Five hours. One giant bluefin. Zero fish in the boat.

Throwback to EP08 with Kaz Otsubo, from this time last year. He settled into an epic 5-hour tussle with a giant bluefin tuna. Deep into the fight, he handed the rod off to another angler on board — who got a bit too aggressive on the fish and ripped the reel clean out of the reel seat.

Then, just as they closed in, a pod of orcas showed up and stole the catch before it ever hit the boat.

Five hours of work. Gone in seconds.

He caught his dream fish. Then let it go.

Andre Kassal's personal best: a 30-pound snapper, the exact milestone he'd been chasing his whole fishing life. Measured, released — swam off clean.

Two years later, scrolling Facebook. A stranger's photo. A 90cm snapper caught in the Hauraki Gulf.

Something about the fins looked familiar. Andre zoomed in on the photo, checked the marks against his memory, sent it to his mates.

Same marks. Same fish.

Most softbaiting tutorials tell you the theory. This one shows you what actually happens on the water.

André Kassal's complete softbaiting tutorial drops tomorrow. 40 minutes. Zero waffle. You'll see the rig, the retrieve, the knots, the hook set, the fight — and what to do when a snapper buries itself in the rocks.

This is the most in-depth softbaiting tutorial for snapper we've seen on YouTube. If you're serious about softbaiting in New Zealand, watch this before your next session 🎣

8 metres down. A bite.

"I had no idea — I'd never hooked a fish of this calibre before."

His wife was on the calculator before it hit the net.

"That's over 30 pounds."

He screamed. His life goal. His ultimate dream.

Seven episodes. Seven legends. What a first chapter. 🎣✨

Kyla Klintworth closed out our first seven weeks with a story that hits differently. From a breakup that left her with a bow she didn't know how to use, to building one of the most authentic outdoor pages in NZ — she summed it up perfectly: stop being a victim, start being a victor.

Still one of our favourite moments from year one.

"Can I cast out the back?"

André said sure. "Just do what you like, it doesn't make sense to me."

Next minute — zzzzz. 85cm. 26 pounds. Held the boat record for two years.

"She's a machine man." 🎣

Andre Kassal cut his teeth on zander and pike back in Germany, before New Zealand’s shallow-water snapper game pulled him in for good. Fifteen years on, he’s landed three snapper over 85cm — including a 30-pound personal best caught on the exact day marking ten years since he moved here — plus a knack for finding kingfish sitting on channel markers hundreds of boats cruise past without a second look.

Credit where it’s due though — his wife Kie is no bystander. It was her idea to buy the 4.5m boat that’s landed all of it, and her own personal best — an 85cm snapper, landed solo in risky conditions near the rocks — held the boat record for years.

Andre tells her story in the episode too.
