A day in my life as a preschool teacher here in New Zealand 🇳🇿🍎

So today is my non-contact day meaning, ito yung 4 hours na nasa office lang ako, doing paperwork like writing learning stories and creating individualized plans for our tamariki. 📝

A little quiet time, a little paperwork, and a lot of love behind every learning story we create for our little ones. ❤️

Culture shock is real here in NZ! 🇳🇿

Going back to New Zealand is a bittersweet experience. Nobody prepares you for how much harder it is to leave after a holiday than it was the first time you left the Philippines to migrate.

The hardest part isn't packing your bags or boarding the plane. It's hearing your child ask, *"Why do we have to leave?"* and trying to explain with a hundred different reasons, knowing they're still too young to fully understand. That question feels like a stab to the heart every single time.

But as parents, we carry the weight of today's tears because we believe in tomorrow's opportunities. Maybe they won't understand our decision today, but one day they will look back and realize why we chose to build our lives permanently in New Zealand.

For now, we leave with heavy hearts, grateful for every hug, every laugh, and every moment spent with the people we love.

Until we meet again, Philippines. 🇵🇭❤️🇳🇿

Would you still choose to work abroad if you knew the truth? 🇳🇿✨

Here are the things I wish someone told me before I started my journey:

Tip #1: Don’t just chase the country—understand the process.
Hindi sapat ang “gusto ko lang.” Know your visa, requirements, and timeline.

Tip #2: Your savings = your survival.
Mahal ang cost of living. Hindi sapat ang pang-ticket lang.

Tip #3: Be ready to start from zero.
Kahit experienced ka, you might need to humble yourself and rebuild.

Tip #4: Rejections are normal.

Tip #5: Connections matter.
Minsan, opportunities come from people, not just applications.

Tip #6: Don’t give up too early.

Working abroad isn’t just about a better life…
it’s about becoming stronger than the person you used to be.

If you’re dreaming of this path—come prepared, not just inspired. 💛

Current Reality for Overseas Teachers

1. Economic pressure (recession effect)
Schools are more careful with spending, so:
Fewer permanent roles
More fixed-term or relief positions
Lower staff turnover (teachers staying longer)
👉 Result: fewer job openings overall

2. Supply vs demand is uneven
Primary teaching → oversupply (too many applicants, including overseas teachers)
Secondary teaching → shortage (especially Maths, Science, Technology)
👉 Result:
Primary jobs = high competition
Secondary jobs = still in demand

3. Preference for local teachers
Schools tend to choose locally trained teachers first because they:
Already have NZ registration
Don’t require visa processing
Know the NZ curriculum
👉 Overseas teachers are hired when:
No suitable local candidate is available
The role is hard to fill

4. Increased competition compared to 2024
More locally trained teachers entering the workforce
More overseas teachers applying

Slower hiring processes
👉 Result: harder and slower job search than before

✅ Bottom Line
Not easy, but still possible
Easier if:
You teach a high-demand subject (secondary)
You are flexible with location
You already have NZ registration

Harder if:
You are applying for primary roles (especially in cities)
You are not yet registered
You are limiting location options
