Get to know Ben Ng-Wai Shing, a GP at Wakefield Health Centre and all-round creative with a deep appreciation for community, good food and the outdoors. When he’s not helping train future doctors, you’ll likely find him throwing discs through the trees, making something with his hands, or escaping into the mountains with a tent and a strong coffee waiting on the other side.

Perched on Mount Street with sweeping views over the Maitai Valley, Candy Clarke and her husband Ben Wouts’ character-filled villa is a celebration of history, creativity and lived-in charm. Ten years on, the “accountant and the artist” have layered their home with treasured pieces, global finds and Candy’s own artwork, creating a space that feels both eclectic and deeply personal – where Victorian themes meet a life well-travelled, and every corner tells a story.

With The Dorado Experiment’s debut album Becoming A Man out in the world, Blue is riding the high of a milestone moment – one built on instinct, improvisation and heart. Equal parts grounded family man and electrifying frontman, he brings a sense of wonder to everything he does, all filtered through his trademark rose-tinted glasses and a deep belief in the power of feeling alive – on record and on stage.

Eleven years ago, Claire and Alan Bywater left Christchurch behind for a new chapter in Nelson, drawn by the views, the light and the lifestyle they’d long dreamed about. What they found was a modern home perched above the city that quickly captured their hearts. Filled with collected treasures, handmade pieces and plenty of personality, their home is a warm and relaxed reflection of the life they’ve built together – shared with their beloved dogs, Bear and Baxter.

In our April edition, artist Claire opens the door to a home shaped by creativity and an appreciation for the beauty of everyday living.

We all know dogs are experts at making us smile, but some of our local four-legged legends are doing far more than chasing tennis balls and perfecting the art of the afternoon nap.

While most pups are clocking up couch time, a select few are clocking in for duty. Around our community, these clever canines head off to “work” in classrooms, hospitals and rest homes, out on search and rescue missions, and even helping track down criminals. From soothing nervous young readers to standing steady beside their handlers in high-pressure moments, they bring more than wagging tails and hopeful eyes.

In our April edition, meet four local working dogs and the humans proudly holding the lead.
