⚠️4.15pm update⚠️ from Fire and Emergency NZ
A Fire and Emergency observation flight this afternoon has found no visible signs of fire following today’s rainfall.
District Commander Nigel Dravitzki says the rain has had a significant impact in helping to suppress the fire, while ground crews have been working on the flanks of the fire to strengthen the containment lines.
"This is very good news," he says. "Tonight, Fire and Emergency’s specialist drone crew will be using thermal imaging to detect where the hotspots are around the perimeter of the fireground, and tomorrow we will be able to position our ground crews to target those areas."
Iwi, the Department of Conservation and councils are all involved in the discussions about the next steps in the management of the fire.
"We are very mindful that another change in the weather could alter the situation and lead to a resurgence of fire activity, so we are planning for all contingencies," Nigel Dravitzki says.

CURRENT SITUATION
It is estimated between 1500 and 2000 hectares have been burnt and scorched inside Tongariro National Park and we are being advised that the fire is still uncontrolled.

RESPONSE BEING LED BY FENZ FROM CENTRAL PLATEAU EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT CENTRE
Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) are leading the response to the fire.
An Incident Control Centre has been established at the Central Plateau Emergency Management Centre in Waimarino (National Park), bringing together Fire and Emergency, DOC, Police, iwi and civil defence staff.
Ruapehu Civil Defence staff and Regional Civil Defence are operating from the Central Plateau Emergency Management Centre to better support any requests for assistance from frontline responders.
Council staff are currently on standby to support response efforts if requested.
Regional Civil Defence in Palmerston North is monitoring the situation and is on standby to assist if requested.

ROAD CLOSURES
State Highway 48 is closed.
State Highway 47 is closed from the intersection with SH4 at Waimarino (National Park) with no detours available

RESIDENTS IN WAIMARINO (NATIONAL PARK) ASKED TO CONSERVE WATER AS A PRECAUTION
Residents of Waimarino (National Park) are asked to conserve water as a precaution.

Currently the township water supply is not under threat from the fire - but this is being monitored closely by Council and their water contractor Veolia.

AIRCRAFT OPERATING
Twelve helicopters and three fixed-wing aircraft have been deployed to fight the blaze, with three additional helicopters enroute.
The rugged terrain is making air attack more effective than ground crews at this stage.

ELECTRICITY AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS
The fire is currently posing no threat to power lines or other electricity grid assets or telecommunication services.
Affected operators are closely monitoring the situation.

EVACUATIONS
Three outdoor education camps - Maungatepopo School Camp, Hillary Outdoors Camp and Taurewa Camp - are being evacuated as a precaution.

Ruapehu Civil Defence is closely monitoring the situation and is prepared to assist should further evacuations be required.
• Any mandatory evacuation orders will be issued by FENZ in coordination with the Police.
• Police will lead any evacuation of residents.
• If asked to evacuate, please do so immediately.

Residents are encouraged to:
• Stay informed - All updates about the situation will be issued by FENZ.
• If you are in the area, follow and any all advice and instruction FENZ gives.
• Prepare a grab bag with essential items.
• Keep pets close and ready to go.

RESIDENTS NEAR FIRE AREA URGED TO KEEP WINDOWS AND DOORS SHUT
Residents near the fire area are urged to keep doors and windows closed to minimise smoke exposure, and those feeling unsafe or vulnerable to smoke should self-evacuate to stay with family or friends.

RUAPEHU MAYOR AND MINISTERS FOR CIVIL DEFENCE AND CONSERVATION IN SUPPORT
Ruapehu Mayor Weston Kirton has been briefed by FENZ at the Central Plateau Emergency Management Centre.

Together with Taupo Mayor John Funnell Mayor Kirton is planning a fly-over of the affected area this afternoon.

Mayor Kirton said that the fire affecting the Tongariro National Park is devastating for our community.

“Council is standing by to support local communities in every way we can. Our Civil Defence team is on the ground, ready to assist with evacuations or welfare needs, and we are working closely with Government to ensure the necessary resources are available now and through recovery,” he said.

Civil Defence Minister Mark Mitchell and Conservation Minister Tama Potaka and our local MP Suze Redmayne are travelling to the Central Plateau Emergency Management Centre today to support response efforts and receive briefings on the situation.

The way I see it: Stand up and be counted

Brian Portland
June 25th 2024

Frank Herbert once said: “There is no real ending… It’s just the place where you stop the story.”
Of late, there have been more and more posts on the Socials, relating to our environment, social justice and cruelty to animals.
Most of us just hit the ‘Like’ button because we really don’t give a crap! We just want to keep the peace?
A generalisation you might say?
Well, I don’t think so! We tend to go with the flow…
Me included. I just hit ‘Like’ and hope I won’t get another post like this… If I continue to get such posts, well, I tend to either hide them, or, if the person continues, I’ll block them. Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to get rid of them — these are people on a mission. A mission to stamp their footprint across all forms of social media! Tik Toc, X ( Formally Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat etc.
Topics currently ‘hot’ right now, include… Trump versus Biden,
Yep, we all know this one!
Then there’s the plight of children around the world, the focus on war torn zones.
Human and animal cruelty. Indigenous rights.
There’s the environment and a thousand other pressing issues that have been around for many years. These are now thrust in my face, yours too, on a daily basis. (A.I. is a powerful tool.)
Now, here’s the thing, over the years, I’ve been involved in a number of causes… I’ve advocated for individual and equal rights, especially for those with a disability. I’ve championed the cause for our indigenous people, stood against GMO, protested against animal cruelty. The list goes on.
In my own way, I’ve been active, talking about these concerns in the public arena. I have not stood out, but I’ve plodded along in my own little way.
As a former talk host, I had an opportunity most don’t get. I could interview numerous people and promote their cause, to a degree.
Suddenly, the powers that be, decided there was too much content around this and I needed to focus on more topical issues of the day.
I conformed and like everyone else and became another puppet, doing as I was told. Most of what I was passionate about did not stop… The cruel treatment of animals continued, treatment of fellow human beings disgusted me.
It got worse, racism increased, the corporates like Monsanto, drug companies like Pfizer became more and more powerful.— the total combined revenue according to Fortune 500 in 2021, was over $700 billion -
It would be fair to say that somewhere along the way, I lost interest.
Like a lot of other people, I believed I was just banging my head against a brick wall. I no longer had the energy to continue.
It becomes a little scary when we think about it.
Social media’s been around for a long time
Long before Al Gore claimed “he took the initiative in creating it”. In fact, the internet — and its predecessors — was a focal point for social interactivity. Granted, computer networking was in its infancy, but it was a great forum for discussing mutual topics of interest, perhaps even meeting or renewing acquaintances with other humans.
In the 1970s, that process began in earnest.
Today, it’s in our face, nothing’s sacred. I am not going to dwell on the negativity that’s thrust upon us on a daily, no, hourly basis. Actually, make that instantly. I want to focus on some of the good that social media can do. It allows us to champion a cause.
Instead of deleting, I began to read some of the information that I was being sent. I learned about glued meat; processed sausage; chicken nuggets; caged animals, the slaughter of Minke whales and much more…
Not that I wasn’t already aware, but like many others, I think I had had my head somewhat planted firmly in the sand. I look at the way whales, one of the most beautiful creatures on this planet, are being slaughtered, wildlife being killed for sport, forests destroyed… It saddens me, what legacy are we leaving for our grandchildren and their children?
All of Mother Nature’s cures being driven more and more by corporate greed and profit.

I recall the Mel Gibson movie Apocalypto about the Mayan kingdom in the height of its opulence and power; it portrayed how the foundations of the empire began to crumble. It told the story of a people living in harmony with nature… Then, civilised man came along.
So, the simple question here is, are you prepared to stand up and be counted?
