Deb Hinde: Illustration and Design

This is where I share my joy of bringing characters to life, whether they're creatures or humans.

I've always had a 'thing' about children's picture books, but it wasn't until 2003 when I signed up with Scholastic New Zealand, and illustrated A Kiwi Night Before Christmas by Yvonne Morrison, that my dream came true. Since then I've illustrated many more picture books, and in 2016 started publishing my own stories under the PictureBook Publishing imprint. Children's picture books are a fantastic way for children to understand and learn about our world and their place in it.

What a weekend! Met these two amazing women killing it in the indie publishing world of romance and cosy fireside mysteries. and . All things publishing were talked about and I got to share my knowledge as a small publisher of picture books. Lovely to see and meet familiar faces .art and .island.publishing. Thank you NorthWrite and for the invite to speak.
It’s nice to be back in my box slowing down and saving up my words to use at my next event at Berkeley Normal Middle School on the 23 May. 😉

While my holiday break feels like a distant memory I’ve had a look back at some of my photos. In my last week I took part in the Wanakā Autumn Art School. What a fabulous experience - five days fully immersed in printmaking with the fantastic tutor Inge Doesberg.

A rest day today after a big day yesterday walking to the top of Grandview Mountain. Gorgeous views from the top across to Aspiring.

I’m back!!
It’s been a long minute since I’ve posted here. For me 2025 was the year of overwhelm and dealing with two shoulder injuries from opening a double garage door. The pain was unbelievable and the limitations on what I could manage resulted in me simplifying my life. So I’ve been living in a very small world since July, with my arms in close - much like a TRex 🤣 Physio was an ongoing for months but it wasn’t until I had cortisone injections just before Christmas that the pain was managed.
On a positive note I was able to continue working - I’d received two picture book manuscripts to illustrate which I was super excited about. They’re both completed and the files are with the publishers.
I’m now on a break spending time with my sister and hubby who live in Wānaka. Our first adventure was the Milford Track, a walk I’ve always wanted to do. I knew my fitness level wasn’t good enough to independently walk, so we paid for the privilege of hot showers, cooked meals and a nice comfy bed.
What an amazing experience! Fantastic guides, light packs and dry weather (most unheard of) with rain on our last day which was a boat trip on the sound.
MacKinnon pass was incredible - we had light cold winds and superb views across and down in the valley below.
It was lovely to get away from all that is going on in the world. I’m feeling a lot more creative than I have been in ages.
Playing is important, both in the studio and out of it! 😊
I’m definitely embracing the year of the Fire Horse.

Had a wonderful lunch with two special people and .art in Whangārei. So good to catch up with likeminded people. 😊
