Deb Hinde: Illustration and Design This is where I share my joy of bringing characters to life, whether they're creatures or humans.

I've always had a 'thing' about children's picture books, but it wasn't until 2003 when I signed up with Scholastic New Zealand, and illustrated A Kiwi Night Before Christmas by Yvonne Morrison, that my dream came true. Since then I've illustrated many more picture books, and in 2016 started publishing my own stories under the PictureBook Publishing imprint. Children's picture books are a fantastic way for children to understand and learn about our world and their place in it.

Another look back in time (2012) at a project I worked on with the lovely crew at Penguin. Simple brush-type line two colour art explaining how to do things like; burping, swaddling and bathing baby for new mums! I don't think the book is still in print but it appears you can get it as an ebook.
These were completed in Adobe Illustrator using the pen tool - before the blob brush tool was introduced. 😊

With the help of the band members from The Dung Beatles snake learns to embrace his uniqueness. Another book written by the brilliant author/librarian Jo van Dam. Back in the day before computers took over the world, I used to design souvenir tea towels for Derek Corp.
Can you guess which one took me the longest time to complete?
I had to work with a limited range of colours that would work with the design. These were done to size on a large sheet of heavyweight paper and painted with gouache. I could use a black fine tip felt pen to do much of the outlines that were black otherwise it was stick your tongue out and hold your breath while using a brush or a ruling pen. Those were the days! A lot of work for not much $$$ 😜

I don't remember ever receiving a Valentines card, ever - so it's good to see the concept of Valentines changing to embrace all the people and things that you love in your life. I've worked on some fab projects over the years. Like these two Tui Garden books that were published by Penguin (2009 + 2011) way back before they became Penguin Random. Lots of bugs were illustrated along with a few herbs, artichoke, shallots etc. I'm a detail-ist and was in my happy place working on these. The illustrations were completed in my pre-digital era, acrylic on illustration board. An added bonus was receiving an advance copy of the books! 😉
