Searching in the archives and still new finds! Collection of landscape photos of the town by the late Ian Williamson taken November 1997. View from the upstairs balcony at the Goldfield Mall. You will note a few building changes along the centre. Checkout the previous petrol station, the old Women's Rest Room and RSA building along centre on east side of Queen Street. On the right the Warehouse before the garden centre encroached on the footpath.

XMAS MEMORIES. What are your best Christmas memories?
When the hospital had over 200 beds (Seven Wards), many will remember walking the corridors and stairwells singing carols, then gathering at the front entrance for the finale. The corridors decorated, all windows painted with a variety of scenes. In the top photo, Dr Apthorp leads staff and family gathered in the singing of carols for the patients and visitors.

YIKES back to the drawing board - need to practise scanning slides!!! It wasn't until I got to some photos of Thames I realised "whoops" a mistake and my scans were query all flipped! FLIP what a mess.
First example, the one on the left of trams is probably correct, whereas Waiomu below, would be the right example.

BACK TO THE 70s. Just driving along Richmond Street, maybe stop off at the Brian Boru or turn right to the Martina. Or continue straight past the old Thames Auction House. Need petrol, stop on the left and go to McDonell Motors, and yes they would come out - fill the car, check the oil and even the tyres...oh yes those were the days!

XMAS 80 years ago - 1945 at Thames Hospital. Snips from the Nurses' Journal December 1945 remembered the hardships and joys of the past year. Soldiers and staff were returning from the war, the town had held peace parades for VE and VJ days. On top of that the town had battled a major scarlet fever outbreak which necessitated the use of the St George's Church hall as an isolation unit. The hospital was ably led by Matron Hill - who is pictured with her staff (lower right) in 1948.
