UPDATE 1:30PM HAS NOW REOPENED :-)

South Canterbury State Highways - SH8 Closed Fairlie to Twizel - Significant Ice

Snow was manageable overnight, however there has been significant ice formation between Burkes Pass, Tekapo and Lake Pukaki this morning.

The winter maintenance morning shift have been out gritting since 4am, however some heavier vehicles have got stuck around burkes pass and the decision was made to close SH8 until vehicles are cleared and the temperatures start to head in the right direction.

Crews are still spreading grit and working hard to break up the ice, but It’s likely to be a few more hours before we can open the full route between Fairlie and Twizel up to traffic.

ROAD UPDATE: Two areas of State Highway in the South Island’s Mackenzie Country that had been affected by snow will close again tonight from 6pm due to the ongoing risk.

State Highway 8 between Twizel and Fairlie, and State Highway 80 between Lake Pukaki and Aoraki/ Mount Cook, will remain closed until tomorrow morning. The decision to close these roads again is based on more snow flurries expected overnight, and this combined with snow melt and freezing temperatures will likely mean extremely icy conditions.

It also means crews can continue working on the roads, breaking up ice and spreading grit. Decisions will be made in the morning about when to reopen.

Other South Island highways that had been closed by snow this morning are now open, but motorists are encouraged to avoid travel if they can while the risk from snow and ice remains.

⚠️Snow fell to low levels overnight, we saw over 40cm in Tekapo and snow drifts of up to 1m in places.

Areas of surface flooding closer to the coast, rain easing to showers Saturday this morning and forecast to clear by midday. Watch for possible patches of ice in low lying shaded areas and bridge decks.

SH08 Fairlie to Tekapo (Burkes Pass) – CLOSED. SNOW / ICE. Narrow road widths due to deep snow windrows in areas, stranded vehicles need to be cleared. May not see opening until later today.

SH08 Tekapo to Twizel – CLOSED. SNOW / ICE. Crews working on road surface to be able to open later this morning.

SH80 Mt Cook Hwy – CLOSED. SNOW / ICE. Heavy falls Mt Cook Village, less around the lake, road being assessed and hope to open within next few hours.
