The Māori co-author of one of the children’s books at the center of a political storm says children will lose out on experiencing their culture. Jill Smith was confused when Education Minister Erica Stanford imposed a near total ban on Māori in new additions to a series of books used to teach five-year-olds to read. Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Whānau Tahi are in full preparation mode for this weekend’s Waitaha Kapa Haka Secondary Schools’ competition. Year 9 student Kahurangi Roberts says he’s thrilled to take the stage for the first time alongside his tuakana and tuahine, and hopes their performance will secure a third consecutive title for the kura.

He aha te kai? Ko te haka te pata me te parāoa mā Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Whānau Tahi! E whakarite ana ngā tauira mō tā rātou tū ki te whakataetae-a-rohe o Waitaha mō te Kapa Haka hei āpōpō.

For Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Whānau Tahi students, haka is their bread and butter! The students are preparing for their performance at the Waitaha regional Kapa Haka competition tomorrow.

Ka katia e Te Tāhuhu o Te Mātauranga ngā kupu Māori, atu i ngā ingoa, i ngā pukapuka hou o te raupapa Ready to Read Phonics Plus i roto i te Marautanga o Aotearoa. Ko tētahi o ngā pukapuka ka tangohia e rātou, ko At the Marae. Ko tā te kaitito pukapuka, a Jen Smith, ehara i te reo Māori te aronga matua o tēnei rauemi, ā, he kupu māmā ēnei kupu e ono.

The Ministry of Education will cut Māori words, except for names, from any new books in the Ready to Read Phonics Plus series in the NZ curriculum. One of the books they will remove is At the Marae. According to the book’s author, Jen Smith, Māori language is not the main focus of this resource, and these are only six simple words.

Kai Tahu academic, Dr Hana O’Regan will be living in Awarua for the first time, taking the lead on Awarua Whānau Services’ 10-year strategy, Kahu Ariki.

Mā Tākuta O’Regan e ārahi i te rautaki o Kahu Ariki. Ko te aroka o te rautaki kia hau mai kā āheika o te hauora, te whai mahi, te taha mātauraka me te whai haere mō kā whānau o te toka.

Tākuta Hana O’Regan has returned to Awarua to take up the role of Kaihautū (Chief Executive) of Awarua Whānau Services, a local Kaupapa Māori health provider offering clinics and a wide range of health and wellbeing support. She will lead the organisation’s new 10-year strategy, Kahu Ariki, which aims to provide health, employment, education, and housing opportunities for whānau in the deep south. According to the students of Te Kura Whakapūmau, they are ready for the regional competition in Waitaha this Saturday. Some of the school’s alumni have returned as tutors for the team, and these rangatahi are hyped up by the fresh style and new energy flowing among them.

Kei te kawe mai a Te Kura Whakapūmau i te āhua hou, i te reo hou hoki ki te whakataetae ā rohe o Waitaha i tēnei tau. Te Kura Whakapūmau are bringing a fresh look and a new sound to this year’s regional kapa haka competition in Waitaha. The team are not new faces to regionals and this year, former students of the kura have returned as tutors, and they have reignited the kapa’s spirit for the world of haka.

Ko hoki mai a Tākuta Hana O’Regan ki tōhona kāika!

Ko riro e Tākuta O’Regan i te tūraka Kaihautū mō Awarua Whānau Service, ka mutu, i tū tōhona pōwhiri ki te marae o Te Rau Aroha, hai whakanui i tōhona hokika mai ki te kāika.
Ngāi Tahu academic and Māori language advocate Dr Hana O’Regan has been appointed Chief Executive of Awarua Whānau Services. A pōwhiri was held at her home marae, Te Rau Aroha, to celebrate her return.
