Just when I was starting to tire of true stories about cults, along comes this 2023 documentary about the Aum movement, which culminated in their pumping of deadly gas into Japan’s underground train network. What had seemed like a harmless yoga movement 10 years before had evolved into an apocalyptic anti-everything organisation, but how? This fascinating documentary looks at Aum leader Shoko Asahara’s lonely and frustrating upbringing and ultimately, how he turned what initially appeared to be a benevolent group into a murderous cult with eyes on political control.

How would we ever see lurid 1970s Italian so-called “Giallo” movies if not for AMC+? Well, there are a bunch available on Tubi and some through a few other places, but the state of the prints used on those free streamers makes some of them virtually unwatchable. The Fifth Cord (1971) looks great, and in fact, the over-the-top inventiveness of the cinematography is one of its major assets. Starring Franco Nero (Django, Die Hard 2) as Andrea, a jaded, frustrated journalist who conducts his own investigation of a serial killer while the police train their sights on him as the lead suspect, sadly, the plot is fairly cliched.

Sony's got filmmakers and content pros in its sights with the new ECM-778 shotgun mic - a high-res, mono beast built for cinematic sound. At just 176mm and 102g, it’s small but mighty, with precise directivity and a clear, full-bodied tone that punches above its weight.
