New Zealand remains under a national strong and unusual current threat following the UPGRADED magnitude 8.8 earthquake near OFF THE EAST COAST OF KAMCHATKA RUSSIA at 2025-07-30 11:25 AM.
ℹ️This threat level is expected to remain until at least 3.00pm today.
From 3.00pm today, it is possible the threat level will decrease across the west coasts of both the North and South Islands.
Due to the reflections off South America, there continues to be a possibility for continued beach and marine threat overnight for the east coasts of both the North and South Islands.
The Chatham Islands are also likely to experience similar surges to last night.
A further National Advisory will be issued mid afternoon.

⚠️Tsunami Advisory – Strong Currents and Surges Continue (Update as of 6:15 AM, 31 July) ⚠️
This is an update on the ongoing tsunami advisory following the magnitude 8.8 earthquake near Kamchatka, Russia.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) advises that strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges continue to affect all coastal areas of New Zealand.
ℹ Key Updates:
• The tsunami advisory remains in effect for all New Zealand coastal areas, including the North Island, South Island, Stewart Island, Chatham Islands, and Great Barrier Island.
• The threat is expected to remain in place until at least midday today (Thursday 31 July).
• Tsunami activity has already reached parts of the country. Initial surges are not expected to be the largest and activity may continue for many hours.
🚫 What You Should Do
People in or near the shore in affected areas should:
• Move out of the water, off beaches and shore areas, and away from harbours, marinas, rivers and estuaries.
• Stay off the beach – do not go to the coast to watch wave activity. Surges may be dangerous and unpredictable.
• If you are on a boat or at a marina, leave your vessel and move ashore. Do not return until advised it is safe to do so.
• Share this information with friends, family, and neighbours, especially those who may not receive alerts.
