Good Morning,

Update for 08:30am 24-10-2025

While it has been quite windy overnight, we do not appear to have had any spread or change in size in any of the three fires at Pลrangahau.

There are approximately 43 staff on the ground for firefighting operations, supported by an incident management team of 7.

Bush Road remains 100% contained. We are monitoring for hotspots periodically, but there is not active fire at this time.

Schaeffer Road is 100% contained and we will have 8 firefighters working to extinguish hotspots around the fire, with the aim of having these out by late today, depending on weather conditions.

The Saleyard Bridge fire remains 50% contained and we will have 33 firefighters working today to extend this containment line and also put in further containment lines in anticipation of a wind change later in the day today.

Our heavy machinery and helicopter operations have ceased for the time being, but may resume if we have a flare up in fire activity.

The cause of the fires remains under investigation.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand thanks the community of Pลrangahau for their amazing support of our teams on the ground, the streams of food, drink and other items that have been arriving have been greatly appreciated by our crews.

23/10/2025

Eastern District Police are asking the public to reconsider travelling to Pลrangahau, in Central Hawkeโ€™s Bay this long weekend.

The area is experiencing large forest fires, which have not been fully contained.

Windy conditions and steep terrain are also challenging emergency services to contain the blaze, which is expected to continue burning for several days.

While no evacuation orders are in place at the moment, those that reside in the area should make arrangements and be ready to leave if they experience smoke or see fire.

Poor weather conditions are expected to get worse and may cause event cancellations โ€“ such as todayโ€™s A&P Show in Hawkeโ€™s Bay.

Remember to call 111 in an emergency.
