Anzac Day is playing out a little different this year but as always, "Lest We Forget", it is still a very special day to remember those Kiwis killed in war AND honour our returned, and serving, servicemen and women.
The song below is one that I have enjoyed & still treasure from when I first heard it in Aug 1983. "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda” tells the story of a young Australian soldier who loses both his legs after a bomb attack at Gallipoli during the First World War. Eric Bogle, who has lived in Australia since 1969, was inspired to write it after watching an ANZAC Memorial Parade.
Here are two versions: the first live and introduced by Eric, the another (next post) with lyrics. Enjoy!
Recorded live at Stoneyfell Winery, Adelaide, South Australia on 1st March, 2009.
