The new Children's commissioner will have big shoes to fill!

Today, we acknowledge the significant contribution of our outgoing Children's Commissioner Dr Claire Achmad, whose term ends on 31 July 2026.

Since her appointment as Chief Children's Commissioner in 2023, and as New Zealand's sole Children's Commissioner from 2025, Claire has been a steadfast and independent advocate for the rights, interests, and wellbeing of all 1.2 million mokopuna in Aotearoa.

Claire has always been deeply committed to listening to children and young people directly, ensuring their experiences, aspirations, and concerns inform decision-making at every level.

Throughout her tenure, Claire has championed children's rights, amplified the voices of children and young people, and consistently called for greater accountability and action on issues that matter most to mokopuna.

From advocating for improvements in the state care system and implementation of recommendations arising from the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in State Care, to speaking out on child poverty, maltreatment, barriers to education, mental health, and wellbeing, her leadership has helped keep children's rights at the centre of national conversations.

Ngā manaakitanga, Claire. Thank you for your service, your commitment to our mokopuna, and your leadership through a period of significant change for our organisation.

You leave Mana Mokopuna in a strong position to continue advocating for the rights and wellbeing of all children and young people in Aotearoa.
