Sir Mason Durie (Rangitāne, Ngāti Kauwhata, Ngāti Raukawa) is widely recognised for his influential work shaping modern approaches to Māori health, particularly in the area of mental wellbeing. Across a career spanning more than four decades, he has held key leadership and academic roles at Massey University, including Professor of Psychiatry, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Māori and Pasifika), and Professor of Māori Research and Development.

Beyond academia, Sir Mason has contributed extensively at a national level, serving on a range of prominent boards such as Te Papa Tongarewa and the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology. His dedication and impact were formally acknowledged in 2010 when he was knighted for his services to Māori health and public health.
