🌿Bee Trudgeon from The Sapling has put together a thoughtful list of book recommendations for children coping with loss through su***de. Among the titles featured is I Don't Like Wednesdays by Linda Tuhiwai Smith, illustrated by Isobel Te Aho-White, which is part of the Whatumanawa Collection.

Bree writes, “My brother, Apa, died on a Wednesday…” This simple (yet devastating) sentence gives us a way to approach overwhelming grief, breaking it down one day at a time. Deeply connected to many cherished memories and routines the brothers shared, Wednesdays shift from being the younger sibling’s favorite day to one he wishes he could erase from the calendar.'

🧡🧡Congratulations to our stunning design team who were announced as finalists in the PANZ Book Design Awards 2025!

While Sarah-Louise and Te Kani are still creating, imagining and innovating in our production office both Tahlia and Sophie are now living, loving and exploring in different parts of ultra-hip Scotland as they spread their wings and adventure off into the big wide world. We are so proud of all four of these creative visionaries who will always be an integral part of what HUIA creates.

The Publishers Association of New Zealand Te Rau o Tākupu (PANZ) established the awards to promote excellence in, and provide recognition for, the best book design in Aotearoa New Zealand. The winners will be announced at a special ceremony in Auckland on Thursday 18 September.

💛
When asked about what motivated Sacha and Josh to write this book, they responded, ‘Our son is a similar age to Charlie in the story. We want our little boy to grow up in a world where talking about feelings is normal and encouraged – where it brings you closer together, not further apart. This book is a way of sharing that hope not just for our son, but for other parents and their kids too' – Sacha Cotter and Josh Morgan.

🪨🪨Humorous and light-hearted, A Guide to Rocks, and the Māori language edition He Taonga te Toka invites readers to explore how boys and men deal with their feelings – using the metaphor of carrying rocks for emotions.
Dad gives Charlie a dusty rule book with ways to hide ‘rocks’, but when they try everything and fail, they need to rewrite the rules – fast. With striking illustrations and skillful writing, this book promises to be an eye-catcher and a heart-warmer particularly for boys and their parents, and for parents of children who struggle to find words for their feelings.
