We're so thrilled that Adrienne Jansen has been recognised for her mahi in writing and publishing with an ONZM in the King's Birthday Honours.

Adrienne has been a long-time supporter of Whitireia Publishing. She visits each year to lead discussions about the process of editing creative work. Over the years, our ākonga have been lucky enough to collaborate with Adrienne on many projects, including some with Landing Press, and we're so thankful for her generosity and tireless advocacy.

Ngā mihi maioha and congratulations, Adrienne!

Happy 10th birthday, Massey University Press🧡🎉

Students and tutors of Whitireia Publishing attended last Wednesday’s celebration of this milestone at Massey College of Creative Arts. We were joined by past students and many other friendly faces, some of which we managed to snap a group photo with!

Not only did Massey University Press turn 10, it also welcomed a new Publisher. We extend our deep appreciation to Nicola Legat, outgoing (and founding) Publisher of the press, for her incredible mahi and contributions to our course over the past decade. We also warmly congratulate Odessa Owens, our former senior tutor, on her new Publisher role. Mauri ora!

Next up, our tutor Claudia, who is a marketing and publicity pro. This is Claudia’s first year as a tutor on the course. Claudia has previously worked for Huia Publishers and the Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust, to name a few. She is also a board trustee on the Storylines Children’s Literature Charitable Trust. An impressive mix.👏
Claudia is a graduate of this fantastic course as well.🎓We are lucky that Claudia has chosen to return to the course to share her experience and knowledge with us all.
Ngā mihi nui, for your happy and positive energy which boosts us throughout the day. 🤗 ☀️

Kia ora followers! We wanted to introduce our wonderful tutors. They are caring, patient, and encouraging people. They also have great expertise and knowledge. 🤗
First up, Theresa, programme lead and all-round publishing expert. Theresa wears a few hats, one of them is running this amazing course, which she is also a graduate of. 🎓
Thank you for your support so far Theresa, we are in safe hands.

One of the many great aspects about the Graduate Diploma in Publishing is that during the year we get to help publish real books. 📚This year there are five projects which students are working across.
Pictured are some of the Āporo Press project team.
Last Thursday they had the pleasure of meeting their author, Anthony Lapwood. They are excited to work with and his novel The Carnivore Diaries. Coming to readers in late 2026 👀 thanks to .
There are some memorable motifs in this novel including a fictional brand of energy drink — Hell’s Bells🔥. Gaby, one of the project managers, was inspired to bring Hell’s Bells to life and surprised Anthony with some custom-made cans to take home. They’re a committed bunch, can you tell? 😝

Exciting news has reached us in the classroom! Whitireia Publishing alum and co-founder of Āporo Press, Damien Levi, was profiled in Newsroom this week, delving into his fascinating journey as a publisher and the success of Laura Vincent’s ‘Hoods Landing’, nominated for the top fiction prize at the Ockham NZ Book Awards next week. ‘Hoods Landing’ is a book dear to our 2025 graduates, as many of them were involved in its publishing. We wish Damien, Laura and Āporo Press the best of luck for next week!

And thank you, Damien, for the shoutout!

Congratulations Mia Farlane, Todd Atticus and the team at Mākaro Press on the cover design reveal of ‘AND HOW ARE THINGS WITH YOU’ at Unity Books. Our publishing class loved the opportunity to go in and see the process and final unveiling! 🤗

A few weeks ago we welcomed our 19th classmate, our air purifier, who has been hereby dubbed by the class as Phil Ter! ❤️

After an intense 15-minute voting period, the results were decisive. Unsurprisingly, in a class full of future publishers, we settled on wordplay.
