Welcome back to Pandora.

It’s been an honour and a privilege to be a part of the beautiful and breathtaking world of Director James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, working under the guidance of Costume Designer Deborah Scott to create more than 2,000 costume items. Every piece, including costumes, knives and sheaths, was made as a physical, real-world item in our workshop, before our friends at Wētā FX and Lightstorm Entertainment translated them into the digital realm.

We embarked on our journey to Pandora in 2006 on the original Avatar film, and it is no exaggeration to say that it has been a profound joy to continue to delve deeper, bringing the costumes to new heights (in this case, both literally and figuratively) as this extraordinary world has continued to expand.

We cannot wait for you to discover the costumes and props for the Na’vi, the RDA and Spider, and the new iconography we helped shape for the two new clans introduced in this third instalment: the Tlalim, also known as the Wind Traders, and the Mangkwan, also known as the Ash People.

A special thank you to all of our talented crew, Costume Designer Deborah Scott, Property Master Brad Elliott, New Zealand Prop Master Melissa Spicer, Production Designer Ben Procter, Production Designer Dylan Cole, Supervising Art Director Luke Freeborn, New Zealand Supervising Art Director Kim Sinclair, Supervising Art Director Aashrita Kamath, Live-Action Art Director Ben Milsom, Makeup and Hair HOD Sarah Rubano, the talented VFX artists at Wētā FX and Lightstorm Entertainment, and to the wonderful James Cameron, Jon Landau, Jamie Landau and Brigitte Yorke.

Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District has taken form as a constellation of renowned institutions, all within walking distance: the Louvre Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. The district is now welcoming a new addition: Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi.

We had the pleasure of creating over 300 hyperrealistic models and dioramas for this world-class cultural destination in the United Arab Emirates, working closely with our manufacturing partner, Acrostar.
These pieces help guide visitors through the beauty and diversity of our planet.

Some models are monumental: a 15-metre-long Shastasaurus, one of the largest known marine reptiles, is suspended in an atrium, as if propelled by its flippers in the great depths of the ocean. Others are as small as 8mm bees.

Across more than 35,000 square metres, visitors will walk among bygone species alongside a rich educational showcase of today’s living creatures; from semi-translucent illuminated models of endangered animals to more than 100 outdoor sculptures of native wildlife from the peninsula and the wadis.

This extraordinary museum stands as a testament to the vision and dedication of the Department of Culture and Tourism, whose leadership and commitment to the arts and entertainment continue to shape the region’s cultural landscape.

We were privileged to contribute as part of the wider project team, working closely with Alec Fitout and Miral, who have been instrumental in driving the fitout and delivery of this remarkable museum.

Venture back (by boat!) to Peter Jackson’s , which celebrates its 20th anniversary today.

In addition to concept design, costumes, props, weapons and specialty makeup effects for the 2005 blockbuster, we built a miniature Venture ship, a replica of a real-life steamer. Our team rigged this miniature with lights within each cabin, its rooms filled with the smallest of details.

To simulate this vessel’s perilous journey, the model was placed on a motion control rig to sway back and forth, its movement that of a ship in treacherous sea.

As Peter Jackson’s 2005 monster movie celebrates its 20th anniversary today, discover some of the concept art that helped bring to life this richly layered world.

Our design team produced an extraordinary amount of artwork to visualise Skull Island and its inhabitants (giant primate included), imagining its frightening creatures, its ecosystems and its evolutionary history.

We make cool stuff!

Weta Workshop is a five-time Academy Award®-winning concept design studio and physical effects manufacturing facility that services the world’s entertainment and creative industries. For over 20 years, we have applied our creativity and craftsmanship to blockbuster films and hit television series including The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit motion picture trilogies, Blade Runner 2049, Saban’s Power Rangers, King Kong, Avatar, The Chronicles of Narnia, District 9, Elysium, Thunderbirds Are Go, and Ghost in the Shell.

In additional to our film and television projects, we’re also an international tourist destination, producer of consumer products from Middle-earth (and far beyond), behind-the-scenes and media production facility, and creator of public sculptures and immersive exhibition experiences like the record-breaking Gallipoli: The scale of our war, at New Zealand’s national museum, Te Papa. Creativity, innovation, and authenticity are the threads that tie this diverse mix of offerings into one fantastical whole.

On March 19, 2018, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern officially opened our brand new, world-leading mixed reality facility: Weta Gameshop. Together with groundbreaking Florida technology company Magic Leap, we’re forging new frontiers in mixed reality as we create Dr. Grordbort’s Invaders for Magic Leap’s spatial computing platform.

From humble beginnings in the back room of their flat, co-founders Richard Taylor and Tania Rodger have built Weta Workshop into what it is today. Richard, Tania, and the wider Weta Workshop crew regularly go on the road to meet film buffs and lovers of cool stuff worldwide!
