🌧️ Is New Zealand about to experience a surprisingly warm shortest day? 🇳🇿

A powerful Tasman Sea weather system is set to bring heavy rain, strong northwesterly winds and possible thunderstorms this weekend.

⚠️ Heavy rain warnings are in place for Fiordland, the Westland ranges, and Canterbury and Otago headwaters from Friday evening, while damaging winds could hit eastern South Island regions before spreading to Wellington and Wairarapa on Saturday.

🌡️ Despite the wild weather, temperatures will be unusually mild, with Christchurch forecast to reach 21°C on Saturday.

❄️ The warmth won't last, with colder air and frosts expected to return early next week.

🌧️💨 Is New Zealand heading for a wild weather weekend? 🇳🇿

Strong northwesterly winds will build across the South Island from Friday, strengthening around Wellington and Wairarapa on Saturday. Those attending the Super Rugby Final should expect rain and strong winds by Saturday evening.

Heavy rain, thunderstorms, and rapidly rising rivers are possible across western South Island areas, the Southern Alps, and parts of Canterbury and Otago.

MetService has issued Orange Heavy Rain Warnings for Fiordland, the Westland Ranges, and Otago and Canterbury headwaters, with Strong Wind Watches also in place for parts of the lower South Island. More warnings may follow.

🌧️⚠️ Could your area be next to see flooding, slips, or damaging winds this weekend? 🇳🇿

South Island braces for significant weather this weekend.

A strong northwesterly flow will bring heavy rain and strong winds from Friday to Sunday.

🔶 Westland Ranges: 220–290mm of rain (highest totals)
🔶 Canterbury Headwaters: 160–210mm
🔶 Otago Headwaters: 100–140mm
🔶 Fiordland: 120–150mm

💨 Southland, inland Otago, and western Clutha may experience near-severe gale northwesterlies on Saturday.

Rapid river rises, flooding, slips, and hazardous driving conditions are possible. More warnings or upgrades could still be issued.

🤔 Is your region about to get warmer... or wetter? 🌡️🌧️🇳🇿

A warm nor'wester from Australia is set to lift temperatures across parts of New Zealand on Friday and Saturday, before cooler air arrives on Sunday.

At the same time, heavy West Coast rain is expected to spread north, clipping parts of the North Island from Taranaki to Horowhenua, with some rain also reaching Southland, Otago and Canterbury.

And forecasters are already keeping an eye on another possible burst of Tasman Sea rain next week.

🌊 El Niño Has Officially Arrived... But Could This Be One of the Strongest Ever? 🇳🇿

Scientists say a strong El Niño is now underway, bringing a higher risk of drought and drier conditions to many Western Pacific nations, while parts of the Central and Eastern Pacific could see above-average rainfall.

Forecasters warn this could be one of the strongest El Niño events on record, with impacts potentially lasting beyond the usual season.

🇳🇿 What could this mean for New Zealand's weather in the months ahead?

🌧️ Is YOUR region about to get soaked this week? 👀🇳🇿

New Zealand's next 7 days of weather look anything but settled. Heavy rain is targeting the West Coast from Friday into Saturday, with some of that wet weather spreading into parts of the western North Island.

Meanwhile, showers are expected to affect most regions at some stage, but some eastern areas could escape with much lower rainfall totals.

📍Will your town see flooding rain, passing showers, or stay mostly dry?

🌦️ Is Your Town Enjoying Winter or Battling It Today? 🇳🇿

One spot in NZ woke up to a chilly 1.1°C 🥶, while another is sitting at a much milder 13°C 😎.

Meanwhile, rain is sweeping across parts of the South Island, heavy showers could pop up in central areas this afternoon, and some regions are enjoying a surprisingly calm winter's day.

👀 But here's the question...
If you could swap today's weather with ANY other place in New Zealand, where would you choose and why?

🥪 South Island's Weather Lunch Is Served... But Who Gets the Last Bite? 🇳🇿

The South Island is currently enjoying a "weather sandwich" 🍞☀️🍞, with a ridge of high pressure bringing settled weather between areas of more unsettled conditions.

Enjoy it while it lasts — this calmer weather is expected to shift north, giving parts of the North Island a taste of the sunshine too.

🌤️ Weather tip:
🔵 High pressure = settled weather
🔴 Low pressure/troughs = cloud, showers, and changeable conditions
🌪️ In the Southern Hemisphere, winds rotate clockwise around lows and counterclockwise around highs.

❓Are you enjoying sunshine or rain today?

🚗❄️ Are you clearing a foggy windscreen the wrong way? 🇳🇿

The fastest way to clear it is to:
✔ Turn on the demister
✔ Set the air conditioning to maximum heat
✔ Turn OFF air recirculation
✔ Open the windows slightly for 20–30 seconds

Why? Cold, dry air from outside clears condensation faster than the warm, moist air already inside your car.

Many drivers don't realise that driving with a foggy windscreen is illegal in New Zealand and can seriously reduce visibility.
