🇳🇿SUNDAY WEATHER UPDATE: STRONG WINDS PEAKING ACROSS PARTS OF NZ

According to MetService, strong to severe winds are affecting parts of New Zealand today, with winds expected to peak today before easing for many areas tonight or overnight.

Another surge of nor’westers is expected on Monday, mainly across the South Island and into the lower North Island. These winds are forecast to be less strong and less widespread than today’s event.

Wind-related damage remains possible in exposed areas. Alpine snow may also affect some South Island highways, while thunderstorms are possible across parts of the south and west.

🌬️ STRONG WINDS EXPECTED ACROSS PARTS OF THE NORTH ISLAND TODAY 🇳🇿

MetService has issued an Orange Strong Wind Warning for the Tararua District, with severe west to northwest winds expected to gust up to 120 km/h in exposed places.

🕘 The warning is in effect from 9am to 8pm today, Sunday 23 August.

A Strong Wind Watch is also in place for inland Hawke’s Bay about and south of State Highway 5, where winds may approach severe gale strength in exposed areas.

🌨️ ROAD SNOWFALL WARNINGS FOR SIX SOUTH ISLAND ROUTES 🇳🇿

According to MetService, Road Snowfall Warnings are in place for several South Island mountain routes on Sunday, 23 August, as rain is expected to turn to snow showers.

❄️ Lewis Pass (SH7): 9am–9pm — 4–8cm near the summit
❄️ Arthur’s Pass (SH73): 11am–7pm — 2–4cm near the summit
❄️ Haast Pass (SH6): 7am–6pm — 1–5cm above 500m
❄️ Lindis Pass (SH8): 6am–6pm — 3–6cm above 700m
❄️ Crown Range Road: 6am–6pm — 5–10cm above 700m
❄️ Milford Road (SH94): 5am–6pm — 15–30cm on the highest parts of the road

According to MetService, a Heavy Snow Watch has been issued for the Southern Lakes and Central Otago for Sunday, 23 August.

❄️ 5am–4pm Sunday: Periods of heavy snow are possible above 700m, with snowfall amounts potentially approaching warning criteria. Lesser amounts are possible above 500m.

MetService says there is a moderate chance the Watch could be upgraded to a Heavy Snow Warning.

According to MetService, the lowest temperature recorded by 7am was -4.1°C on the Desert Road, while Twizel reached -3.8°C, the coldest temperature in the South Island.

Even the Chatham Islands recorded a slight frost, with a minimum temperature of 2.0°C.

🇳🇿 WARMER WINDS SATURDAY, COLDER WEATHER FOR THE SOUTH SUNDAY

According to MetService, warmer nor’west winds will strengthen across New Zealand on Saturday, with some areas potentially reaching 20°C or higher.

💨 On Sunday, strong winds are possible across parts of the South Island and lower North Island.

🌧️ Heavy rain and possible thunderstorms are expected on the West Coast, with snow returning to the mountains and ranges as colder air moves into the South Island during the afternoon.

Northland should remain more settled under high pressure, while the main cold change is not expected to reach the North Island.

Several parts of New Zealand are under Orange Weather Warnings for heavy rain and strong winds this weekend.

🌧️ Buller & Grey Districts
From 3pm Saturday to 9am Sunday, 90–120mm of rain is forecast, with peak rates of 15–25mm per hour. Thunderstorms are possible Sunday morning.

💨 Strong Wind Warnings
Severe gale west to northwest winds may gust up to 120 km/h in exposed places across parts of:
• Tararua
• Wairarapa
• Wellington & Marlborough Sounds
• Canterbury High Country
• Southland south of Gore & Stewart Island

According to MetService, parts of New Zealand experienced a cold start this morning, with some locations recording temperatures around freezing or below.

Overnight minimum temperatures:

• Auckland : 6°C
• Hamilton : 1°C
• Wellington : 8°C
• Christchurch : 0°C
• Dunedin : 5°C

Twizel recorded -5°C, while Timaru reached -1°C.

MetService says warmer morning temperatures are expected for the weekend, although some wetter weather is also on the way.
